I need to look for a new car recently got rid of my BMW 325 compact due to a growing family and I'm lost for ideas.
I like the idea of an estate such as volvo 850 or Saab 9-5 however not keen on it giving me a similar mpg as my BMW. Most of the driving is around town and the odd motorway journey once or twice a week.
Has to be an auto though as the better half doesn't like driving manuals
I have thought about a new car but like the idea of something I could work on still myself without needing loads of software.
ISOfix points would be idea but not the end of the world.

E46 320d Touring, my lad spent ages looking for one. All the ones he really liked were auto and he wanted manual. M Sport or SE spec, though lots need front wings, sure you're familiar with that from the compact. My son ended up with a 2.2d X type estate, massive boot. Not so many auto's though. Check the sills though. The Saabs he looked at either had grubby interiors or, were generally poorly maintained. The Volvos were similar, or had moon miles.

Yeah mine had a new front wing on the compact. Is the 2.0d engine any good? Always thought the 330d was the one to have. Tempted by the E39 530d aswell not sure what these are like as I had a petrol E39 a few years ago. Also like the TD5 but I think it will drink just as must diesel.

My wife had an e90, 2nd Gen 1 series and now an e82 coupe, all with the 2.0d. The coupe is also auto. ( and was actually supposed to be an e46 Touring, until she saw it, three times the original budget). All quite quick, economical, the coupe is averaging about 40-42. Lots of scare stories about the engine, but then there are various scare stories about every car. I think as long as they get regular oil changes, they do mega miles. The auto's are 'sealed for life', but the word seems to be change the fluid above 80K or so. We'll have the coupe quite a while yet, my wife loves the thing and with all the speculation over diesel/ electric/charging I'm not planning anything else until things are clearer.

There's a guy on Facebook marketplace selling a 1997 audi a6 with the 2.5tdi engine it's an automatic aswell. Its in good condition by the looks of it.it doesn't have isofix. But they are great big cars and they can do a lot of miles. I think there's a guy on here with one with maybe 350,000 miles on his. Oh and it's 1500 pounds and the car is in Leicester.

I work with a chap who put over 300k on an E45 320D and again over 300k on an E9* something. Once again with the 2.0D. He says they’re fantastic, however both suffered complete Engine failure. At which point he had well and truly got his money’s worth. I bought an 2007 model 330D for a friend and it’s a fantastic motor. Pulls like a train and returns good mileage. It has however given him a few problems. I’d quite like an E60 535D however my budget limits me to high mileage examples. I’m quite tempted by a 2007 model 735 on LPG. Seen some at sub £4000 with quite a lot of kit and sub 90k. My vote for an economic daily would be in a 1.9 TDI VAG. A4, Passat, A6, Golf, Seat Cordoba, Toledo, Octavia. Ive had numerous over the years, racked up some serious mileage on multiple and had excellent mpg in the process.

The Volvo would fit all your criteria expect fuel economy
If you've had BMWs before then stick with them E39 touring is the best due to its size but a good e36/e46 touring would be next on my list I have a massive disliking to diesel cars but if economy is important then really that only leaves you the 2.0 diesel as fitted to the e46 320d they are quite good on fuel The later diesels become quite complicated after 2000
Or you have the rover 75 estate (also uses the 2.0d from the BMW) Mk4 tdi golf estate W124 e class diesel Jag X type Mk2 V70 Volvo (but they suffer from auto gearbox faults)
