Working on my sister's Polo, wanting to swap out a balljoint but one of the 3 captive nuts on the securing plate is no longer captive and just spins, spins, spins.
As well as this it's a weird shallow 8-point design nut...a 13mm 6 point socket won't fit, and a 12 point has too much give, resulting in me rounding the nut further.
Any suggestions on how to get it off?
I'm leaning towards just angle grinding the head of the nut off as I'm going to replace it anyway but don't want to endanger the wishbone!

I know this type and if I have any doubt that the bolts will undo, I tighten them and just snap them off and renew the bolts and plate with nuts and washers.

Overtightening? I loosened a couple of turns and now the nut and bolt are seized together... New ball joint on order as I'm planning on just breaking it...not sure it's been done in 140k so that ain't bad :-)
