Hello.
I’ve just bought an mot failure and have some questions which hopefully can be quickly solved.
I’ll start with the easy one first. Inefficient parking brake. Is it still the case that the brake has to be in full effect within 3 clicks or reasonable travel of the handbrake? If so could it just be a case of making an adjustment to this?
The rear brakes on this particular vehicle are drums, where the car will have passed a rear brake test I imagine that the shoes and drums are capable of passing the test but the cables may be aged or stretched. Is that a fair conclusion to make?
The second problem is an imbalance across the front brakes. I have only ever experienced an imbalance across the rear once many years ago and that was because I had not assisted a faulty “automatic adjuster” in taking up the slack after fitting a new rear cylinder. Obviously this isn't going to be an issue with the front disc brakes.
The car has covered less than 1500 miles since the last mot. Is there a chance one of the pistons in the front callipers could have partly seized in the callipers due to lack of use? Or the sliders have seized up a little?
Would removing both front callipers, cleaning and greasing the slider seems up, pushing the pistons back in and refitting possibly clear the fault?
If that doesn’t do it, will it be a case of new callipers, or a rebuild with new discs and pads?
Thank you for all and any help on this problem. It’s much appreciated!
