***SOLD 6th May***
This advert has been long debated and even now I'm not sure it is the right thing to do!
The car was purchased by my parents from Mercedes-Benz Chelsea (then Bradshaw Webb) back in July 1999. They paid £22,000 (invoice below) for it (which having checked in today's money is £37k!) when it was 5 years and 8 months old with 49k miles. I even got a day off of school to go with them to pick it up! The car has been loved over the past twenty years, but when my parents retired it went from being my mum's daily driver to a second car and that's when the problems set it.
As much as my parents love the car, they aren't car people and were definately reactive rather than proactive when it came to maintenance. For the first few years it was serviced by their local dealer, Hughes of Beaconsfield. After that it was serviced at Wheels VT, also in Beaconsfield and then a local mechanic who lives in the next village along and worked on their fleet of vehicles when they had their business.
The last (and only) at the moment service receipt they gave me is from November 2016 (added below) for £550.96. It includes two tyres (which were for the front) and since the they added two new Continentals on the rear.
In November 2017 the car started idling roughly when cold and cutting out periodically. They drove it to Portsmouth in November 2017, but the next day they took it out locally and it kept stalling. They got home parked it up and it has sat there since. The invoice was from when the car had been sat a few months (battery was dead) so had a new battery and a service.
The last MOT was done in July 2017 and I knew after that it would shortly need welding to the rear subframe as well as two rear springs. I was going to get it done in winter 2017 along with the bodywork, but then the other issue arose meaning it was too problematic to move about.
All the wings are rusty to varying degrees, and it isn't getting any better as it is is sitting outside. A few years ago (2014/2015 maybe) another car scraped the body against the driver side rear quarter. As a result the car was Cat D. The resulting damage wasn't repaired and can be seen in the pictures, it really is light. The overall bodywork is incredibly poor so it didn't really make a lot of difference. Parking dings & scrapes compliment the rusty arches. You'll be able to see from the MOT history that up until 2014 / 2015 when it was in daily use it was in fairly good order, but quickly deteriorated.
The definate things needed are;
- Repair of the unknown engine issue
- Rear subframe welding
- Rear springs
- Respray and bodywork
The interior is actually not too bad. Current mileage is 189,206. I tried to charge the battery but it was completely and utterly flat, it wouldn't even charge, so there's no battery at the moment. When it parked up the roof did actually work, but if I can get hold of a battery I'll try and test it.
Work on the assumption that there is no service history. As mentioned above I've got the most recent invoice but I'm not sure what else I'll be able to find. Even if I do find some more it won't show yearly stamps every 12 months on the button, more likely sporadic bills for things that broke as and when.
As it has sat for the last 18 months I'm sure everything above has become worse than it was. The car is located in Chalfont St Peter (the village centre postcode is SL9 9HE) which is 10 minutes from M25 J17 or 15 minutes from M40 J2.
The 'white Merc' as it's known in the household has been much loved over the past 20 years but as I'm expecting twins this summer and my brother is currently living overseas it isn't a priority for wither of us at the moment. Rather than see it get any worse I thought I'd put it on RR and see what comes of it.
If anyone is interested reach out via PM and I'll come back to you.
