My s60 d5... Oh, you said fun lol E39 530i M sport would be my choice. Ok, i only had a lucky break on a hire car and ended up with an S60 D5 for a long weekend, but i loved it, especially when it got me out of a few sticky situations i put it into. I take it ownership is significantly different? I'm with the Mondeo turbo as i would like one myself, but the lack of numbers might put me off. Did that engine go into the S-Max as well? All the very best, Geoff. It's a great car, I just dislike diesel's lol. It's not very happy if you try to drive it like a hot hatch It's sold now anyway lol

MG ZT190. I had a new one many years back and it was sodding brilliant! Fast, handled superbly, the V6 sounded wonderful and it was very practical as a daily yet a magnificent mile muncher and B road hooligan. For £3K you can bag a very good one ( early pre facelift is better looking IMHO )with a history of servicing and evidence that the all important and costly belts have been done. Yep, it only has 190 BHP but it puts it through the chassis and onto the tarmac superbly. Hugely underrated.

Thanks for all the suggestions, goes to show what variety there is out for not a huge amount of money. I’m already going to look at a car on Friday, I’ve found an Accord Type R that on paper seems to tick the boxes. Most importantly there’s no rot on it anywhere (apparently) and despite high mileage the engine should be in good condition as it’s had a top end rebuild by a well known specialist. We’ll see how I get on and I’ll report back if a decent 3 grand ATR is possible!

850 or ph1 V70 T5, stick a mapped ECU in it and a catback exhaust and you'll be chewing front tires for laughs. Can't wait to get mine back on the road!

I like the BMW 6 series. Seem to look so young despite having a bit of age now. Peugeot 406 coupe v6 is nice, my s80 d5 does 0-60 in 8.0 and is like driving a settee and does great mpg , it's just a bit old git, I guess I am ha ha

It wasn't 100% as described as there is a tiny bit of corrosion on the passenger bulkhead (drivers is perfect however) and one of the rear arches has had a repair (and not a fantastic quality one). However I managed to negotiate the price down to something I felt happy with and I go to collect on Wednesday evening. Full thread to follow but here's a photo from the ad.

Congrats on the new ATR. We're in (or were in, now) similar situations with regards to budget and criteria. In fact I had looked into ATRs and I was a tempted by your Teg but 95% of my driving is on the motorway so felt that something with longer gearing and the torque hit of a turbo would be the best chance of entertainment for the few times it presents itself these days.
Anyway, to continue the game (because its fun) my left field suggestions would have been a P10 or 11 Primera GT or Rover 220 Coupe, or some turbos would fall in budget, but both are hard to find these days.

Yeah the Integra was pretty low geared, motorways weren't terrible but could get tedious after a while. Saying that my favourite moment was passing an MX5 on the motorway with a kid in the passenger seat, he waved so I dropped a gear straight into vtec. Pretty sure it made his day and mine! I've heard those Primera GT's are hugely underrated, don't know much about them apart from that!
