Had a bit of a hankering recently to own a 406 diesel.
Are they dreadful? I like comfy cheap cars and the old 406 quite appeals to me for some reason.
I remember seeing lots of them as taxis back in the day, my mate had a 306 d turbo ages ago (I know different car) and I use to think the engine was great, very comfy old thing too.
Am I mad?

I have one, which is affectionately known as The Skip.406 HDI estate with 135000 on the clock, it’s been used as a work vehicle/van before i got it. I think it’s great! 44mpg average, much of it around thedoors, cavernous load area, all mod cons, all for £500 with best part of a full test

I ran this as a daily a few years ago. 2.0 hdi 90bhp . It was a nice thing to drive and I did 40k in it without any major issues. The 90 apparently has a solid flywheel which is a bonus as well as no intercooler. Mine had a few electrical glitches in the end, wipers not turning off, intermittent Speedo but it towed my caravan with ease and was quite pleasant inside.

HDI saloon on over 200,000 did another 75,000 without problems, then the bottom pulley let go and killed the alternator.
My fault really, it made a noise for about 1000 miles! That and the shagged front suspension did for it.
Comfy, economical and all the toys still worked too. I'd have another one, if I needed to replace the 205.

Peugeot diesels are a good lump, its the rest of the car you need to scrutinise. The interior can occasionally leave bits in your hand and being French it will run out of electric somewhere within the system. Avoid autos as the box is prone to going on strike without reason, its French............

I wanted one as a company car when they were new, got a Chrysler Neon 2.0 petrol instead.
I think the Peugeot would have been a better option.
People like and rate them, so I suspect an easy one to decide on.

Had a 2.2 petrol estate for a while, so the worst of all worlds, all of the 3.0 v6 fuel consumption with non of the fun. It was however super comfy and pretty reliable.
Designed form the ground up to be taxi's apparently so they will always be spacious, comfy and great tooling around cars. No real style or anything bu no real outrageous faults either.

Owned a 2lt petrol one. Went like hell. Handled well for an estate car and massive inside also comfy for king drives. Nearly cried when I scrapped it.

my parents had a 1.8 petrol saloon for many years from new. I only drove it occasionally when visiting them but found it comfortable and well-behaved, and they never reported anything going wrong with it.

Brilliant stuff... sounds like the perfect car for me especially in estate guise. Best start looking around for one locally.

Bought a Y plate 2.0 HDI estate off my mate,210.000 on the clock, paid 300 quid for it had it 5 years, carting logs, concrete, tools etc ,300 mile round trips to my daughters uni fully loaded, one drop link and numerous sets of front tyres is the only time I put my hand in my pocket. At 292.000 it ate its turbo, got 185 quid from car take back, cheapest motor I've ever had, if I'd have looked after it, it probably would still be going today. Buy one before they all disappear.

My 406 is an absolute work horse. Paid £100 for it 20k miles ago cost very little to run or repair. Tows trailers, caravans and many a car on the recovery dolly with the towbar that cost £40 off ebay and runs well with a stainless steel mini back box 99p and free induction kit It's velour interior is super comfy and it is actually fairly frugal on fuel despite being a 2.0. And it looks good on the £50 18" team dynamics i bought Negatives: People keep driving into it, the fan blower has a mind of it's own, indicator stalk is occasionally dicky, passenger window has gone on strike, As far as bangernomics go, it's the champion

Had one as a pool car in my previous job, a diesel estate that had led a very hard life, when it rained water used to run down the inside of the windscreen. Boring as hell but pretty much indestructible.

Mate of mine had a Diesel Estate that he used to tow his drag car. Was totally mint with only 70k on it but something relatively minor went wrong and he was quoted over 2k to repair it! Can't for the life of me remember what it was but it was something ECU related. He had to scrap it and he was gutted as it did over 40mpg even when towing!
