I think you are 100% correct there bud, cheers that does help! The brakes will obviously be stripped and serviced given how long the car as been off of the road, but the fact that they bind when applied and the po swapped the parts over from another car, and now finding tis bit makes me suspiscios of what I might find, hey ho! brake parts are dirt cheap on these , id strongly suggest a full refurb , new flexis , caliper rebuild etc , added to the fact the brakes are never amazing on these you need them to be right Agreed. IIRC discs for ours were 15 quid a pair, for Bosch or similar standard! (I grant you, it's still entertaining having no brake servo so the amount of braking power available depends entirely on how many Weetabix you've had for breakfast...)

pretty random parts to be off it. did you clock if they are still the original dealer plates on it? Quite.. and yes I did indeed! Definitely a SW car, I found it in Devon and the last tax disc was issued in Knowle, Bristol. About 3 miles from where she currently is now interestingly Bodmin... !! thats bleddy nearly abroad!! nice to old plates still on it though.

Too right you just don't see these around anymore. My first car in 1996 was a white (obviously for a Polo!) 1988 breadvan. It was a 1043cc but with auto choke, sunroof and the plastic rear spoiler. Brakes were always lacklustre but enginewise pretty indestructible 😁 great times! Good luck with the restoration...

Given that they bind, the po has been fiddling with an, they're rusty she's been sitting for ages and as you say they're not exactly McLaren P1 brakes to begin with i think it makes sense! Full brake parts including lines etc on to the parts list

Bit more of a looking over today, had a brief moment of madness looking for the header tank... on a car that has a top filled radiator but anyway! Parts list is growing..
Full engine service parts dizzy leads filters etc, all new brake parts, a bonnet (i know it's patina, but a bit too much patina imo and imay repair/keep this one but if I can source a replacement that will be ok, although bia black is a very rare colour..) front badge boot spoiler/surround (I am undecided about this) tyres wiper motor (I'll see if the old one can be coaxed first) same for the bit lock/latch a period radio A parcel shelf (hens teeth aparently) A battery I will also have to stem the rust around the windscreen or remove screen and cut it all out. Which will have to happen sometime anyway I'm sure. The interior actually has come up ok, if very worm, however I need to have a look at the front seats as they seem somewhat loose.. Also need to give the exhaust system a through going over as well as all the suspension.
Plenty there to be getting on with then, and I've probably missed a hatfull out!
It is a brilliant little car tho, as basic as you like! Seems to be quite popular to, even the partner likes her!
I think how ibwill be going will be a kind of oil rag resto, not gonna modify this one too much as there are some amazing modded ones out there already, and it seems a shame as I doubt there are many this basic still about, and she certainly hascharm in that! Will keep you all updated with progress! Atm until payday it's just a matter of cleaning her up and generally enjoying owning a classic again:)

never had a polo but i dare say the seat runner arrangement is similar to the wobbly seat prone mk1 golf....a plastic guide under each leg and one under the adjuster handle. easy fix.

Bit of time with the little car today. Mended the bootlock! Nice when something is as simple as a loose screw Applied some currust and hammerite to protect the windscreen surround from further degradation. Will have to remove the window and cut it out properly. Beginning to find some more rust... inner wheel arch behind the fuel filler next isn't brilliant, and a bit by the nearside rear suspension mount. Not too bad to considering. Also beem gifted a rear boot spoiler which is nice. The bonnet hunt is on... anybody got one hidden? payday might bring the service items me thinks Also, I did wonder why the glovebox was in bits in the back... the wiring hides behind 🤔 Wonder what is missing! I have also discovered that the passenger window isn't on it's runner, Although I think the mech works. Door strip down tomorrow. Great fun

Bit of prodding and lower dashboard reveals all.... think the battery tray may have gone! Think caught in the nik of time, doesn't appear to have spread too much or to the susp etc. Welding!!!

Definitely a case of "they all do that sir!"
I'm tempted to find the lowest point and out a drain in, using a small rubber pipe, so any water runs straight down to the bottom.

Battery tray is common on them, as is the inner arch behind the filler neck.
Rather than messing about trying to fix the orginal calipers you'd be better off binning them and trying to source a couple of later ones. The later set up uses larger pads so goes a little way to improving stopping.
Do you still need a grill badge? I might have one on one of my spare grills

I can probably find a few bits you need but I'm miles away, I wouldn't bother with the tailgate spoiler tbh

I imaging that's gonna be a pain as will need to remove the tank etc.. that sounds a pretty good plan 're the brakes, will look into it. I do indeed need a smgril badge, if you do I would happily take it off your hands

I'm ok with a road trip tbough the parts I've found so far have been either in Sheffield or Norwich... I'm undecided visa-vie the spoiler, a friend has one I can have for free (beer) so can't hurt to take it and then pontificate about it for some time!
