Apart from the Subaru WRX 5spd and Renault 21 UN1 gearboxes, does anyone know of a transaxle that I can flip the diff in, to invert the box and get the output shafts higher than the crank centreline on a mid engined installation?
The Subaru box is doable but at least 2 grand flipped and converted to 2WD, and the Renault box isn’t renowned for its strength.
The obvious cheap source of transaxles are the VAG group stuff but everything I’ve read says there isn’t space to flip the diff over and the CW&P would need recutting anyway.
Any I’ve missed out there? Cheap?!

Saab B204 with a GT35 or similar, so around 400bhp and 450-550Nm I would think.
Which is a lot I know but the key to the project is cheapness, or a G50 would be the answer at 7 grand a go.

Uprated UN1 wouldn't do it then or would be right on the limit. Quaife LSD and uprated shafts are available for UN1 but £££ Looking at around £6k. No such thing as a free lunch theses days....

Real shame that the vag boxes don’t have space to flip the diff, then. They’re the obvious route to take decent torque without spending motorsport money.

Good shout, Boxster may be affordable if it can be flipped. I guess a 996 box would be ideal if it’s got a similar package as a g50, I will check that too.

Daft question alert, but why do you want to flip the trans axle in the first place? Or is it going in front of an engine for front wheel drive? Just reread the OP, and now feel really silly Could you not use some kind of drop gear setup bolted to the Audi transmission? What you would save in gearbox costs, you could put towards the drop gears (mounted the wrong way up to make the output shafts on the outer casing higher as such)

So some sources say the box from a 986 boxster has room in the casing flip the diff, and others say not. But I think that’s because mods to the casing are needed, which is common and not too much of a problem.
The 5spd box from the 2.5 is cheap but not strong enough. Not found data on the 3.2S box yet.
Another possibility, which would be hard to find and especially get a limited slip diff for, is an old (90s) Renault Master 2.5D (the one before the transverse engined variant that’s common with the Movano). That is a Renault UN5 box but I’ve not found yet whether that’s any stronger than the UN1.
I thought I saw one from an LDV van too. How strong these are I really don’t know. They’re not going to be common fitments in mid engined specials revving to 8k rpm that’s for sure...

Trying to flip diffs is common in the rear engined VW T25 world.
There's not much choice, you've pretty much mentioned them all.
Ultimate engineering do an adapter kit to flip the A4/Passat transaxle upside down to fit in front of a rear mounted AFN TDi engine, don't know if that is of any use??

I’ll take a look but I suspect the gearbox won’t alllow the diff to flip - which is ok if you’re turning the box round to work in a rear engined config.
I think I’m asking for a lot to do this cheaply! Damn shame as if the transaxle alone costs me 2 grand and I want decent power and torque through it, it’s never likely to happen.
So far it looks like I take a punt on a boxster 3.2 box to see if it’ll flip, or try to find a “cheap” 996 manual box as I know they do. They just start around 1500 quid...

boxster is the same as the inline audi boxes. the ferrari 360 transaxle has the output shafts high up, but will cost lots

Nice if you can stretch to it! 6 grand for a semi auto, manual is likely to cost more. Oh and you need the actuation system, that’ll be 4K sir. I’ll walk on by.
I realised in my research that the 2.5 / 2.7 boxster uses the Audi 012 box and the 3.2S uses the 01E box. For 3x the price secondhand, ha ha.
I think a 996 will have to be the one. It’s more expensive than I bargained for but the only other game in town is the Subaru 5 speed, and the parts to flip the diff cost as much as a 911 box. No brainer.
