For a long time i have had a hankering to build my own bike , most likely from a 70s J frame of some sort . Ebay has many of these for sale , most imported from the states with a NOVA form . My question is about registering it after building it . Would they expect it to be rebuilt to standard to get a registration or MOT or will it be fine as long as its roadworthy to get it registered and a numberplate etc .
I.e , is it actually possible to build something from the ground up and get it legal or are all these frames getting bought and sold really just useless unless built to standard ?

Have been looking at doing this myself and think should be ok as long as mot passed. Need nova, dating cert from manufacturer, personal I.D. Payment for road fund if applicable. May need to build on standard rolling chassis to keep enough of original to get date relative plate as opposed to Q plate, ii.e. forks and wheels or original engine and gearbox from looking on dvla site. I know probably not a lot clearer but that's how I'm reading it. Hope that's some help ?

P.S. can change suspension etc after registering .

Thats what i was thinking , having to build it up as standard first and then change after.
Its a bit of a grey area . Cannot help thinking that with the abundance of frames for sale that the sellers no something that joe public doesnt .

Had another bit of a read and probably got to do msva as built from parts of others, amateur build. Will read a bit more when I get 5. I've been looking at old dt's with a view to building an old school flat tracker and daytime test it. Very minimalist shall we say.
