Right, quick question. Ive got my t4 caravelle on the road after a 7 year slumber And the aircon is dead, no pressure in it as far as i can tell. Codes come up in vagcom saying so too.
Does anyone know of a cheap/free way to test it? I don't want to spend on getting it charged up just to find its got a dead rad or something, and would realy love aircon for the summer.
Any ideas appriciated, was sorta thinking pressurise the system with air? Or am i way off the mark?

simple way is vacuum test , the better way is to use oxygen free nitrogen , as it not only helps find any leaks but also helps dry out the system as it attracts moisture, neither though really is a home job

Hi, The correct order for testing is vacuum test, pressure test with OFN (Oxygen free Nitrogen) then evacuate again and fill with refrigerant. You can do a visual inspection for oily/dusty patches, the usual places are the condenser ie. the rad in front of the main water rad and around the front of the compressor. It's not advisable to use air as it contains too much humidity.

We took a motor to Kwikfit and they had an offer on to re gas the air con for about £50 and make it colder or it was free, After about an hour they pointed out the seals were knackered in the pump and charged nothing.

I have a mate who is a refrigeration engineer but I don't like to use up all my favours in one go (he does house electrics too) so I had mine done at kwik-fit too. I think it was £45 via an online offer and they refunded it because the compressor was buggered. Full price is £60 but you can usually find discount codes online.
A replacement compressor will be going on mine at some point in the near future. A black car with black leather is not all that nice at the height of summer. I'm going to call on my mate this time.

I’ve used Kwik Fit as a budget leak test on two cars. Annoyingly on the most recent they didnt find a leak, but the system was empty again after a couple of weeks. So it’s not always that helpful!
