Not that retro. But I had a old Focus TDDI that was brilliant on fuel and went ok too. Used to get 50mpg and never ever went wrong even at 175k. I wouldn't call 175,000 miles / 281,000 km high mileage. My daily had 295,943 km on the odo when it stopped counting in January last year and I'm still using it including having done a few big road trips since then so it'll be around 320,000 by now at least. My wife's car has 436,000 km on it as of last weekend.
I've never had a diesel but my EN Civic got 38 mpg hard thrashed on a 1000 mile road trip which I thought wasn't bad and I've had 29 mpg out of a 3.9 litre four speed automatic EA Falcon wagon with six people and their luggage for two weeks on board.
Snap. Most people however still think 90k is high mileage. That said, the bearing shells that came out of my 140k M3 engine were in a better state than many low mileage engines also in for similar work, with mine also going past other cars without the bearings letting go. I've had cars go to 300k+ on a couple of occasions Back on topic, the Focus TDDI is a very frugal thing. If there was one car I was going to watch the value of going forwards, it probably would be the Focus, but we'll have to wait a while (as in 10-15 years I'd say) ; their survival rate despite their abuse and rust rate is still fairly decent as is the parts availability.

A few years ago I met an old man who had a '60 Fairlane 500 that he'd bought new and used as a daily ever since. It had over 300,000 miles on it and had never had an engine rebuild. It looked like a 50+ year old car that had been a farmer's daily its whole life but everything worked as it should and it was still getting a clean test sheet at wof (mot) time. There is a reason modern car odos go to a million. Just ask turbodieselweasel.

I had a 2006 focus 1.8 tdci and regularly got mid 50s, despite having a heavy foot and thrashing it around the nurburgring and autobahns.

Another vote for the mk3 golf tdi. MPG in the 50's without even trying. Much better engines than the TD's with plenty of power and easy tuning options if you want more. I once drove from south of Paris to Manchester fully laden with passengers and luggage on 2/3 of a tank!

I’ve gone on about this on here previously, however. This returned fantastic mileage, easily 50+. If you sat on the motorway at a little too fast it may drop a little below that but I did manage over 600 miles to a tank. And they run in veg very well so I am told.

We had a 1997 Audi A6 with the 5cyl 2.5TDi 140 bhp lump. It as quick enough and if you kept at 65-70mph you could nudge over 60mpg. 45mpg is more normal.

I always fancied a Charade TD for mega MPG. Has anyone ever owned or knows of any of these still kicking about? I've always wanted one and missed the opportunity to get one when was 19 in 2006. I've since had a GTti but it was the weasel ive always been more curious about. At the time most city cars just had the dizzle out of a larger model minus the turbo but Daihatsu went a different way. The same 1 litre 3 cylinder displacement, turbo'd and intercooled like the GTti but running on the dark stuff!

MK3 Golf or jetta. I realy miss my mk3 estate, stupidly good on fuel , easy to wind em up a bit too, and a wagon will carry loads, chuck a canoe on the roof etc. Great little car
