So I need to get a 4x4 this summer and have about 3-4K to spend, its got to have 5 seats at least and look pretty tidy so Ive been looking at the Nissan Pathfinders as they don't seem to have the scene tax like the other 4x4s? Are they a good buy or do they have a mass of problems, please tell!! Have an old custom car picture to brighten the day

Timing chain is easily cured with a duplex upgrade. I've had 3 D40 Navara and they're bombproof otherwise.

Thanks for the input, seems the timing chain problem isn't its main concern, did a bit of internet rummaging and it seems they have major chassis rot/cracking problems along with the Navara pick ups, have a google and you find all sorts broken in half!
Nissan will do inspections by all accounts and sounds like many have been bought back and scrapped, even low miles mint looking motors!

Yeah the Internet forums are full of doom and gloom though, how many times do you read on a marque specific forum a thread that sings praises and never has a problem.

I'm more than happy to sort problems but I don't want to pay 3-4K for something and lay under it with a welding torch, If I want to do that I will buy a Discovery!

its not a small issue the chassis thing, though harder to spot with the unibody pathfinder as it wont break in half like a navara.
I'd reallg question why exactly you believe you need a 4x4.

As the ground can often look like this which can make it difficult to get the livestock out, not for the skool run or supermarket shopping!

Don't know why people automatically assume that there's no need for a 4x4

Jeep Grand Cherokee... 3.5t tow weight, still look pretty good IMO, and I’m pretty sure the 2.7 diesel is the Merc engine? A few of the guys I go off-roading with swear by them, one uses his purely as a tow car, and loves it... there is the v8 option too, many of which have been fitted with LPG, but yeah the 2.7 may well be worth a look into, not sure if anyone on here has/had one to offer more input of any possible issues...

I've got one. Its the worst car I've ever owned. Totally unreliable and plagued with electrical problems that require dealer only software to sort out. For that reason mine is soon to be sold for scrap. They now fall into the catagory of not being worth enough to justify spending dealer sums of money on fixing. Keep well away!!!

Thanks for all the input, I just seem to be going round in circles unable to decide! in the meantime we have been offered an old Freelander diesel for next to nothing with good history and long MOT so while not ideal it may do for a bit!
