Hiya peeps. Is it possible to tell who hit who from a paint scrape? I got home from work today to find a note on my car accusing me of hitting a parked car. Mine hasn't moved since Sunday and have no knowledge of any bumps, but appears to have a corner of my bumper scraped quite deeply removing paint down to the plastic. Third party turns up with a scrape across his wheel arch which does match my scrape and claims they haven't used they're car for a month so it was my fault. I have no knowledge, but pretty sure I would have noticed.
If It was my fault, then I have no problem putting it right, but looking for clarification that I'm not turning into Mr Magoo! So is it possible to tell? Not worried about damage costs, but am worried about people taking the pee?

Id say its down to them to prove it, or their insurance company. If someone who knows their stuff had a good look at both cars, I'm sure they'd be able to tell.

It all sounded dodgy to me, but the fella is a neighbour. I just told him to get it cleaned up and we'll assess the damage. Green paint on mine, silver on his (with added plastic). Apparently his wife moved the car that morning and noticed the damage. I would just like an answer for my own sanity!
It's not really an insurance job- 60 plate Vauxhall Meriva (sorry, I have a family) v 51 plate MG. It's really about doing the right thing and being honest. It just bugs me that either someone is being untrue or I'm getting old (38) hehe.

Hope you get it sorted, I know with neighbours it can be a hard one My next door neighbour hit my Mercedes back in November and denied all knowledge, scraped the whole side of his Audi and had blue paint of my front bumper on his car, unfortunately for him I wasn’t backing down And after he told me not to tell his wife he paid for the repair! .....I suspect he came home after a few too many As it was after midnight it happened

Maybe it was his wife and she's too scared to admit it so is blaming you?

You can work out the direction sometimes , but very difficult to ascertain car A hitting B or vice versa unless there is glass involved , or a damaged wheel.
Any CCTV?

No CCTV sadly. I'm off to take some photo's this morning. I think I know how its been done. Weird how its the rear n/s against they're o/s rear door wheel arch. I suspect that someone has cut through the parking space next to mine, hitting mine as it went past. I might pop by a body shop and see what they think, offer some cash for a report.
At the end of the day, if I did it then I did it. But I'm pretty sure as a Rospa qualified HGV driver, I would be able to tell if I hit a parked car.

Is it possible it could have happened whilst it was parked where it is? I.e. is it the corner that's exposed in that parked position?
The wife must really be scared of the husband if she'd rather blame a neighbour than admit it!
What outcome has he asked for? Expecting you to pay to fix it or just wanted a rant?
This happened to a friend, a 3rd party accused him of crashing into their car - not sure if they got the reg number from seeing him or made up a random number plate but again that was a car that he knew wasn't driving at the time so just explained to insurance company and didn't hear any more.

The think you need to clarify how the cars were parked, but from the damage you describe, and you saying it happened in a parking space, assumed perpendicular to the road, I cant see how you getting in or out of the space could have done the damage. Surely it’s the other car cutting too tight when turning in?

A bump big enough to trade paint like that should be noticeable while driving, i.e. if you can't remember doing it, chances are you didn't.
If they start being awkward, go straight to your insurance company and tell them your version of events and let the insurance companies duke it out - that's what you pay for. Get them to detail where their car was and how they think it happened, any irregularities will quickly show.

Okay, so in the 1st picture you can see my sad old Meriva. Not moved since Sunday. I'm guessing that they drove from where you can just see the Maroon Golf and clipped mine as they did a U-turn around my car in the car park (Can't have been any other cars there as the Corsa and Silver Golf owners work all day). and sped off towards the right of the photo back up the road. And here is the damage- Nothing major, but only use the car weekends for taking the dog out and it sits here all week.

I'd say (and I'm no expert) that must have been the MG hit the Meriva, its a longer scrape along the MG and its down the side of the car so would make sense that it could rub along the Meriva as the MG was moving. Being that the scrape on the Meriva is more on the end or corner of the car, I can't see how it would physically be able to scrape that far along the MG if it was the Meriva moving? It would be more of a hit than a scrape? Especially being the rear, there would be no way for the rear corner to slide along the side of another car short of you doing a handbrake turn? Probably explained that really badly but I reckon the MG dunnit

how do they propose that you managed to drag one spot at the rear left corner of your car, down half the entire side of their rover?
for that to happen the meriva would have to crab trapezoidally, for 2 meters, or you had macdonalds trays under your rear wheels doing some drift practice ?
no brainer. green rover at fault.
