That is lovely.
After all the feedback I got on various forums, I realised that I was on my way to a hiding.
Better off selling the Blazer and buying a better starting point item.
Obviously not a project either.

Someone, somewhere must have been building them until fairly recently.
When we lived in Kuala Lumpur, there was an LDV showroom with brand spanking new ones in.
Guessing around 2008, maybe 9 when it closed?

I swapped an XR4i that had overheated twice for a LDV 300 Perkins diseasel years ago.
I was going down A580 and got overtaken by a Proton Triple valve that was towing a tiny trailer.
Not having this I thought and planted my right foot got up to about 80mph then lost 3/4 of the tiny bit of power available.
Looked like they'd just elected a new Pope!
Turned out woodruff key on timing wheel had slipped.
Death of a Slurpa! 😀

I had an 03 plate pilot for a few years, for a basic van it was great, 1.9 Peugeot engine was a little slow, a turbo would have helped alot. I used to use a very small amount of acetone 1ml/L iirc "to reduce the surface tension of the diesel molecules" that helped a bit altho it might have been a placebo effect. The pilot was not a motorway speed van as it was right at the top of its capability, at 70mphtone had to be a tactical driver to keep that up, but it was quite happy on a A road, my king pins were worn so I replaced them, other than servicing i cant recall doing anything to it. I sold it with no MOT a rusty wheel arch with the repair panel, I sold fof a fe hundred quid tothe guy who ripped me off and layed me a curse word garage base, but i was suffering yet another bought of depression so it was just 1 less thing arround to deal with.
If i wanted a van an LDV would be on the list. Dan

i spent a month doing 8 hour days driving a drop side pickup for gravesham borough council, circa 2003. so that would make it the 1900 peugot diesel version.
i would agree with accords comment, tough but crude.
the only lasting impression i got was complete reliability and that the accelerator should more accurately be called adjustable top speed pedal, as it didnt matter how little or hard you pushed it, always had the same performance, and mpg come to that.

We had an 04 plate one as a church minibus, it was pretty beaten up, but just seemed to keep going, I found it very easy to drive. Only major fault was all the seals on the doors/windows failed. When we came to sell it I made the mistake of taking it to a car wash, it was a waterfall in there - I had to ask the guy to stop! The guys who bought it wanted to export to Africa, maybe that's where they all went?!

I’ve driven two , one I owned which was an 1800 b series engined Sherpa and the other the firm owned, which was a V8.
I used to get a feeling of wellbeing driving the 1800, it was glacially slow, but a really ‘friendly’ sort of a beast, hard to explain... Rust did for it and at one point I feared the roof might actually fall off if I went over 50.
The V8 was the last one owned by the Ambulance service I work for, I loved it just for the noise it made, particularly the last time I drove it when it dropped its exhaust on the M5, instant F1 stockcar soundtrack..

I bought an 1800 petrol one today. 1975. I must be mad. Horrified to see it has lever-arm shocks, and the steering feels of a similar slackness to a ride on lawnmower .
I need quite a few parts for it to get it working so i haven't driven it yet.
I literally CAN wait.

Many years ago when I was at uni I LIVED with some lads who were in a band. We had a transit and we named it Pamela Vanderson. Awesome thing it was but after numerous breakdowns it was outed for an LDV convoy. It drove us to many countries, Croatia, Germany, Latvia, all over the place. It seemed that all the bands we knew either had an LDV convoy of an ex-riot van transit. In all that time the LDV proved more reliable than the previous transit. Now they get played on the radio and get driven around in brand new Vitos. No idea what ever happened to the old LDV! Turned out woodruff key on timing wheel had slipped. Death of a Slurpa! 😀 The earlier, 1.9 diesel T4 vans did this. Very annoying and troublesome to rectify. However it is repairable provided there isn’t valve and piston issues.

If it helps, when I started my business over 25 years ago I bought LDV`s for years because as already mentioned they were dirt cheap for what they were, you could buy a really tidy one for the price of a knackered Transit and I found them extremely reliable and dead easy to work on.
They clearly weren`t cutting edge technology, but that`s not what we are about on this site, right? Ok the steering was "slightly vague" but they were good solid vehicles. If you drove one once you may have a negative opinion, if you actually owned one I think that would change.

got my Sherpa driving now, its fairly clunky, slow and pretty uninspiring. i think our school had one of these as a minibus in the mid 80s.
