Hi, looking for advice on how to safely dismantle a steering wheel airbag and remove the explosive element and bag. I want to use the wheel and column and horn push for a project that does not require airbags. Obviously not having an electrical connection is a good start when handling it but how careful should do you have to be.I bet theres someone on this forum that's done it? Thanks

You should just be able to undo the 4 bolts.

You should just be able to undo the 4 bolts. Sorry that's a generic picture, mine has no visible bolts to get at as far as I can see. Two aluminium rivets at the side will I think need drilling out , but really I'm concerned with the safety aspect of "messing" with these

Personally, i'd just use a non-airbag wheel be it an OE wheel or an aftermarket replacement. Yes, you could separate the pyrotechnics and the bag from the 'unit' but it could be risky, one false move. Not saying you could easily trigger it, I work with airbag systems on a regular basis but I follow the safety regime pretty well and I am only usually removing and re-installing, not 'tampering', as the manufacturers would call it.

Also if you remove the device, the wheel centre will be really soft and prone to splitting along the detonation safety seams. Obviously pretty easy to overcome as an afterthought to the main dismantling but worth considering.

Thanks for your thoughts Rich, have you ever seen or heard of one going off with no wires attached to it? Not an electrical one, no. Mechanically triggered, yes, but that's a different kettle of fish. But it's a risk you want to consider.

What do you do with the old airbags, do you set them off or is there a disposal channel? Usual practice is deploy safely and dispose. Normally clamped in a vice well away from yourself and detonate, we had an explosives cabinet when I worked at a large main dealer and we could store them safely and have a set-off once a month of the units we replaced. Theory I guess was it saved dragging the det-kit out every time or something but a coil of long wire and a battery do the same job.

Probably a daft question but can't you just keep the airbag and not connect it up? That way you'll keep the integrity of the wheel centre and not fire yourself into outer space whilst drilling the rivets!

I'd go with this option ^^^^^ if you don't plug the air bag in it won't go off so it's as safe as it would be in the car it was removed from. They've been fitting air bags to cars for over 20 years now and generally the older they get the less chance they have of working at all it needs a power supply to set it off so I recon your better of using it as it is instead of attempting to take in apart and maybe loosing some fingers

Just looking for a definitive answer. I would say no, as after all's said and done, there are still explosives within it. Why not go with a boss kit and aftermarket wheel and avoid this whole airbag situation?
