My son is the biggest car fan I know. His love of cars is so pure, and his questions so earnest. As a toddler I asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up, & he said “I wanna be a Ford GT40”. I cried. He asks every day if we can work on the Lancia together, and between times when I have budget for progress we spend some time under it identifying parts and explaining their relationships. He’s just big enough to use the floor jack to raise the rear of the car, and he’s very proud of doing so. He’s only 5, but there’s no question that he’ll keep the love of internal combustion alive in the future. I got it from my dad beginning at his same age when my dad built a Corvette-powered Jeep CJ2 raised up on big tires in 1977. Dad was a total hero... Cars have been the center of every good time I’ve had with my dad, and though I hope to have more broad adventures with my boy, I suspect we’re going to make some autocross and hillclimb memories in times to come. Pictured is “The Sports Car Shop” downtown where I live. I’ve been taking my boy to see the showroom and the workshop since he was an infant. We’ve since become good friends with the owners who adore little George. The Duetto was new this trip and he ran over to it & yelled “ALFA!” Thanks for letting me gush about my boy, maybe do as much here?

What a great story - whilst I did not have the father connection with cars I was into my motors at a very early age and the passion has never left me - whilst I don't have a son to share the passion with - I do share that passion with many, many others regardless of age - but there is something extremely rewarding about sharing that passion with the younger generation - probably because without them our little liking of motorised things on wheels existing or continuing into future generations is dead in the water - I can you see you both having endless fun has he grows up

Great stuff. My 17 year old daughter is expecting a Matt black 67 Mustang as a first car, once she's passed her test. She's going to get a bit of a shock when it's not that.

My 7 year old is another car nut. Everything he does is about cars or driving. Plays the x-box but only if the game has a car. Lego City Undercover, he doesn't do missions (his brother does them), he just drives around. 2 years or so ago I sold my MK2 Golf Gti. He still gives out to me about it, he actually gets quite annoyed. He does of course have a point. This makes me sad for him but proud my petrolheadedness (did I just invent a word?) has rubbed off on him. All his toys are dinkies and remote control cars. I have old car magazines that I give him from time to time and he just spends ages looking at the pictures over and over again. Last summer I took him to a VAG cars show. He took 350 ish photos. I had to print out about 10 pages of the pictures with 9-10 cars on each so he could take them to school to show his friends and of course the teachers too. Some weren't too bad to be fair to himI'll need to buy something classic soon as he always asks why no one takes pictures of 'our' car when at car shows. The youngsters need to be encouraged.

I absolutly fully get this. I do not have a son, but I was the son for many years, and the variety of motoring/old related stuff I was exposed to has totaly shaped my interests now, hence my thread 'why I like what I like'. Its 50% your input, and 50% their love for it, and for as long as they love soaking it up, throw it at them. Your son looks completly zoned in looking through those windows, like youd have to pry him off the glass. He clearly loves it, you are so lucky to share this..

My Daughter who is now 3, got an early start here helping/watching me with my mustang.. She can identify an el camino, a mustang, a land rover and a shogun, so she is doing ok I think. Got a 3 day old son so I will get him started as soon as I can. My mum has photos of me helping my dad working on cars, the one that sticks in my mind is a hunter with holbay goodies.

Without sounding like from an episode of DIYSOS,my son is wheelchair bound so has never had the experience of driving or for that matter, sitting in the drivers seat. He is however enthralled by all things on wheels and has a healthy understanding of muscle cars and yankee stuff! Having said all that,I'm taking my 13 year old grandson for his first "early driver" session next weekend and me is hoping this could be the trigger in a love for cars too. We will soon see! www.youngdriver.eu/venues/central/nottingham_queens_drive

My kids aren’t interested in working on cars (both boys, 13,9) but they like cars. Unfortunately they like exotic stuff like Ferrari’s and Lambos, they do like the Stag tho!

We will soon see! www.youngdriver.eu/venues/central/nottingham_queens_driveWhen my daughter was 12 we got her a junior super car driving day, in a Lambo Gallardo. She was on the track with a couple of lads, one in an Aston and the other in a Ferrari. Not wishing to take anything away from the 2 boys, because they'd obviously never driven before, and she had 😉she creamed them, proper flying down the straights. I remember cheering when she hit the limiter in 2nd. Hairnet, of this parish, turned up to watch her, and he was cheering too. Got some pictures somewhere, I'll have to dig them out.

My two are very different I their attitudes. My eldest daughter (13) couldn't care less about cars - although she does know how to do an oil change (as she helped me for the cash a couple of times!). She does kinda like the capri though. My youngest daughter (7) is itching to help me whenever I go out! Trouble is she's not quite strong enough for a lot of stuff...yet. Whenever it's just me and her in the car, she's straight in the passenger side so she can change gears for me. She also knows what all the dials mean, buttons and peddles do. She does seem to like the bike....she's there every week when it comes to cleaning and re-oiling the chain:

The Boy; and the li'l un They both enjoy a decent show and love a day out in the cars. When one of them works, anyway. Not so massively keen on helping out in the garage. They're full of good intentions but the attention span disappears rapidly. Still, I've told them if they want trips away in the T25 camper this year then someone needs to help me do the work on it, we'll see how that goes....
