Been a while!
For sale is my manual 1993 BMW 520i Touring. Not the most common of cars these days, made a little rarer being a pre-facelift with the newer M50 engine as opposed to the (very much not my cup of tea) M20 that came in earlier cars. Car is MOT'd until June, has a decent amount of history and has just ticked over 147k.
I bought this several months ago as I've always missed my old silver saloon I sold on here a few years ago, and I needed something that'd happily haul around larger car parts. Having won it on ebay without viewing it and then realising it was all the way down in Redruth, I think I got pretty lucky. By no means is it a mint example, but it has been awfully dependable and without fault. I did the 250+ mile journey back home at autobahn speeds thoroughly chuffed with my purchase, and have done just shy of 2k miles since.
The exterior of the car is solid without any real rust to speak of, but is showing it's age a bit. Over the past 26 years it appears to have been polished a lot; still a respectable thing to look at but paint is flat in a few area's. There are a few dings here and there but nothing significant/nothing you wouldn't expect, and overall the thing is really quite straight. I was told by the previous owner that the rear bumper came loose on a trip to Loch Ness, hence the concoction of adhesive's you can see in the photo's on the driver's side rear. The bumper has since been fixed back into place as it should be.
The interior is in relatively good condition; it's a nice place to be inside and super comfortable. The dash and centre console are in great condition and crack-free. I've been left questioning whether the sound system has been upgraded at some point as it's at least on par with my daily 1 series. The seat fabric has frayed/torn a bit as they tend to do when this old, and the headlining has sagged a bit in a few places. The leather on the wheel has come away at the top a little as well. Unsurprisingly the twin-sunroof doesn't work but there are no leaks from it whatsoever. The load-cover for the boot is still present and I use it frequently. Boot only opens with the key.
Mechanically the car is pretty spot on. I've always been a fan of the M50 engine, as very little tends to go wrong with them and they provide a perfectly adequate amount of power whilst returning decent MPG. It's used no oil or water in my ownership, and has always risen in temp up to the middle of gauge and stayed there. It always starts on the button, even after having been sat for a week or so. Clutch could maybe be considered a little high but there's plenty of life left in it realistically. Suspension-wise it was on my to-do list to give it a bit of a birthday; it rides and corners absolutely fine but when going down something like a bumpy driveway there is a little knock from the front. Going off my last one I imagine it's most likely just the droplinks, but with these being reasonably cheap to get bits for I was intending to get a full front suspension kit off ebay and just change the whole lot.
Genuinely my only reason for selling is that I now need something that can not only haul around big bits of car, but also haul big bits of car behind it on a trailer. If this had the towing capacity to legally pull my sprint car with all the spares and tools it'd be staying, but sadly it does not. I really wish I had the space to keep it as the E34 is my favourite 5 Series chassis, and with it being the rare spec it is and having been totally dependable I'd love to give it the TLC it deserves. Hopefully someone on here has a bit more time than I do to spend on it.
Don't hesitate to ask if you've got any questions, entirely likely I've missed a detail or two.
I'm based in the RG7 area if you're interested in viewing.
Forgot to add I've got a set of Thule roof bars to go with it as well as a folder full of receipts, old MOT's, etc.
The price is £1400, but I'd listen to an offer from the right buyer. I appreciate it's unlikely but I'd also consider a part ex (cash most likely your way) in the form of something that's got a towing capacity around the 3000kg mark, preferably not a Landy.
Haven't used this since photobucket lost the plot, so photo's incoming shortly.
