Consider this thread BOOKMARKED. What an amazing thread, having a vehicle that means so much to you and rebuilding it in a foreign country is epic. I can associate with how much your van means to you, i've had my Cavalier since 2002 and i'll never sell her. Just opening the garage door and seeing her sit there makes me smile.Roll on spring when i can get to enjoy driving her again. Anyway, the writing of this rebuild is terrific as are the photos, it's good to see the battles that others are fighting as we can give encouragement/ advice with the process. Yours looks saveable, rusty, yes, but with some time and effort jobs a goodun. I follow Ian Seabrook (Hub Nut) on You Tube and his exploits with Elly his 2CV, very good and the more i watch the more i learn about these cars. Keep up the good work. Thankyou cavboy80 Ive been checking out your Cavalier thread..nice one! Re Ian seabrook (hubnut) he is a legend in the 2cv community and indeed in the wider community of classic car enthusiasts..long may he continue

Ok so now I'm afraid its time I started rambling again after those pics As You are all now well aware the years of neglect had not been kind to the Azu (the van with no name) After the initial excitement of having my baby back in the workshop had faded and the engine was proven to be ok there was much digging with the old screwdriver The results were not encouraging It would need Front lower bulkhead replaced Front upper bulkhead required either complete replacement or extensive repair Left front floorpan needed replacing Right front floorpan required either complete replacement or extensive repair Both A panels required repair or replacement Front parcel shelf where it meets the bulkhead and the metalwork surrounding the speedo/instrument cluster was shot! Centre bulkhead at rear of front seats required repair. Both front doors badly rotted along their bottom edge. Both sills rotted at both ends (repairable or replace) Moving to the rear body section..ie the barrel roof with all the lovely ripples/corrugations Both b panels had some rot but repairable with the drivers side being the worst. Rear load area was kind of ok but rotten at the back...also very bowed from carrying heavy loads (they nearly always are unless previously owned by florists or duck feather wholesalers ) “Top hat section” ie this Totally rotted on drivers side...in need of repair on tother side. Both removable lower corrugated side panels required repair (drivers side hinges and houses the spare wheel jack etc whilst passenger side is held on by 4 bolts and hides the fuel tank) I must post this before my ipad loses it (again )

Phew Thank goodness Ive got that lot posted Right...finally we can move on to the most unique feature of this particular Azu where its bodywork differs substantially from a factory citroen version....The rear crossmember Here is a pic of the van with no names rear end As compared to my other Azu (currently at my mums house in Uk Buckinghamsire awaiting a kind forum member to transport it to Balaton in Hungary in exchange for free holiday accommodation and/or beer tokens) hint hint Spot the differance? Yes the rear crossmember and rear panels on the van with no name were cut away by the previous owner (fat man) so the van would not “ground out” when exiting deep muddy ditches or going up 1 in 3 slopes whilst in 4x4 mode. This radically altered (and in my opinion improved the look) but means that if I wanted to retain that look I would have to fabricate the whole rear crossmember So basically this was the state of my van (Genuine contents of crossmember AFTER pressure washing!) Stay tuned as the next instalment will include me giving up on the project! After all I have never ever used a welder...I'm in a foreign country...what little money I have needs to be spent on my new house...I have bi polar disorder..my kids need shoes etc etc etc. But you know what.......I really really want to see this van live again!! Can it happen ....will it happen.....stay tuned because I promise to keep this thread going to the (not so bitter end

So you really have a rust problem there, not just rats nests, eggs and bones, but rust, a lot of it. The Citroen seems to have a lot of straight panels and bends, making it less difficult to repair, still a major job. Keep the pictures coming, we loves the pictures!

Thanks guys! So this was the point where I became temporarily overwhelmed at the extent of the work required.and the van was pushed into the corner of my workshop for a full three months! Much research was carried out, This included pricing up replacement panels....they would need to be imported from Germany or Belgium...Ive had dealings with the most widely used 2cv parts supplier in the Uk Lets not even go there! They are always on holiday....always deliver the wrong parts.never answer your emails.and are way way too expensive! Anyway Ants rant is over and I feel much better Then I decided to look into having the bodywork done over here in Hungary After all the hourly wage is much lower than in the UK No....the people I approached where totally intimidated by the extent of the work involved and refused it! The only Hungarian “specialist” who was prepared to consider doing me the honour of furnishing me with a quote for fixing the bodywork insisted that I should transport the van 100 miles to Budapest so he could “sandblast it!” In order to assess the damage before giving me a quote in other words £500 to give him my van in order for him to destroy it ! His hourly rate?....£40 an hour There is unfortunately still the belief in Hungary that English people have more money than sense and therefore must be exploited. Well not This Englishman!

One thing that might be worth trying, is getting to know some of the Trabant owners in the area. As Trabi’s do go rusty and there’s quite a lot of owners that are good at rebuilding them.

Right theres something you should know about me and from reading lots and lots of your threads I suspect it’s something most of us retro riders have in common...when people tell me “Its not worth it...you need to weigh it in” That makes me very cross being cross gives me strength £500 for a quote? Really? So I bought this And this Imagine .....I had to ask my wife to watch/read loads of reviews then translate Hungarian welding geeks reviewing this welder as well as many others that weren’t suitable! Anyway I decided on this model because of favourable Hungarian reviews,5year warranty..and importantly its ability to weld at 10 amps! Thin metal shouldn’t be a problem then 2cvs bodys are built of a combination of 0.8 and 0.6 mm steel or thereabouts Thin metal hence the corrugated bodywork...adds strength! I then bought a regulator.....and a 4.5 square metre sheet of 0.8 mm mild steel..roll of mig wire...and a cheap hammer and dolly set and finally a cheap and cheerful angle grinder and assorted cutting grinding and flapwheel discs. Total cost £550 Less than getting a quote and then having to transport my freshly (sandblasted) van back home when i realise i cant afford the Quote! So all I need to do is teach myself to weld Stay tuned

I'm reading your thread from Connecticut in the USA, halfway between New York and Boston. Beautiful little machine. I admire your tenacity. Perhaps it would be worth you crafting a hammer-form in the shape / dimension of the corrugations. That way, you could make you own patch panels, for smaller areas at least, with the correct corrugations formed in. Best of luck to you, John.

I know what you mean about locals trying it on with prices. A Greek friend told me that I shouldn't ask the price but leave it to her so we got the local instead of the tourist price!

Maybe try polish or czech restorers, their prices are known to be cheap (well maybe in comparison to germany?).

Hi folks and thankyou for the comments and encouragement jjeffries good idea! That’s something I will be trying at a later date...I'm really into the idea of saving every square millimetre of the original metalwork as I was once told by a very old and very skilled vintage car restorer that a car is only original once in its life....A cheque book restoration with all new panels would ruin this van so I'm realy trying to save as much of the original panels as possible. Thankyou sincerely for commenting on my tenacity...You made me happy by saying that! Its humbling to have such comments. Morris63 Yes indeed thats what We do..trouble is my wife is of the opinion that anything car related is another language so she always has to refer back to me which alerts the Hungarian to the fact that she is being used as an “ill informed go between” by a (presumably) filthy rich decadent Englishman Hungarians are a canny bunch and well used to spotting and indeed foiling such ruses Ultimately it’s their loss though as the net result is usually me telling them in passable but accented Hungarian to go and boil their head before walking away...sulking..and then doing it myself Its not all bad though theres some very decent types here who will go the extra mile to help you! braaap I did look into that option ie sending it to Poland but I think those days are over...so many people from Western Europe got their cars restored in Poland that their was a restoration boom over there...this resulted in prices going up big time..as well as a lot of shoddy workshops springing up overnight to cash in on the boom! Greed took over and unfairly tainted the reputation of many talented restorers! I think its a shame that having someone restore your car has become the preserve of people with deep pockets But hey ho..tis the way of the world.

So if you recall...I bought myself a mig welder...my lovely wife Katalin wanted me to buy lots of wood and stuff then build her a new kitchen but I bought a mig welder instead Got the gas and regulator..mig wire..auto darkening mask..gloves..tin snips...new angle grinder...lots of .8mm cutting discs...flapwheel discs etc etc etc Right lets practice then... Awfull Equally bad Terrible!...note the blown holes and porousity of the welds..Not good enough Naturally i then went into a two day sulk Whilst sulking i visited a few mig welding tutorials on poo tube and haunted the uk mig welding forums.... After adjusting my gas pressure and learning that “amps spread and volts dig” I came up with this. Its the box that can never be closed! Not perfect but at least theres no holes porosity and there is good penetration when ground down i think it will be ok..in the words of frustrated perfectionists around the world that will do so on with the chase! After loads and loads more practice! At least my welding skills are headed in the right direction I hope!

Keep at it. It’s at least 80% practice, then you have learnt what is, in my opinion, a valuable life skill.
My self-taught MIG “skills” paid our mortgage for 9 months in the early 90s recession.
Likewise, Tin bashing. Don’t be afraid to make you own tools out of scrap - it’s part of the process and very rewarding.

Don't worry - the metal on these cars is so thin welding is very challenging. Keep up the good work - I hope this little story helps you. My folks dragged a 1958 2CV out of a barn in the summer of 2005 - it hadn't moved for 17 years. It's fair to say it was tired. P8040128 by Simes205, on Flickr It needed some work P8040130 by Simes205, on Flickr sorry about my backside. P8040131 by Simes205, on Flickr Considering it's simplicity it has taken a long time to complete (ill health). Here is a picture of it out of paint last October DSC00834 by Simes205, on Flickr It's literally a nut and bolt resto. It's on a new chassis. New roof, 'seats', completely new braking system, loom (all 8 wires!) etc All body work done in stages, new bulkhead and parcel shelf fabricated from scratch. When they got it the B pillars weren't really attached to much! It's so close to being complete but after buying a 3rd drivers door and finding it was also too far gone, they've bought a new one which now doesn't fit!! Hopefully she'll be finished in the next 2 months. It runs and drives - although it's only been driven up and down the drive, it's covered less than 500 metres in 14 years and they've been done in the last 2 months. These were taken at Christmas.
