Hello.
I will keep this as short and sweet as possible. I have a 1986 Nissan Laurel C32 with the L24E fuel injected L series inline 6.
It has quite a pronounced valve train noise. I have recently purchased the vehicle and know it has been stood for some time more I cannot say.
First off I thought it was going to be wildly out of adjustment lifters (the bullets, adjusters are mechanical and not hydraulic).
So I set them all cold (please don't ask me to set them hot the car has no cooling system ATM) to the recommended 0.20mm inlet and 0.15mm exhaust.
The rockers had quite a bit of play left to right but not much up and down. Fired it up. Noise is still there. Bummer!!
Had a colleague with more classic experience take a look and said he wasn't sure what the noise could be, he also suggested that adjusting a little more slack out of the rocker arms might help.
So today I adjusted them all down to 0.05mm and I though the tapping was worse or more pronounced with them adjusted tighter. This has confused me somewhat, I don't know if the noise is the same and I just think I hear a difference.
In the videos I took the tapping is equally bad in both I think. Engine has no misfire and no manifold leak (I removed manifolds and replaced gasket) indeed it revs happily and freely if you ignore the noise.
Ignore the steam/vapour in the video that's a combination of WD40 and the last of the coolant boiling off as the engine warms up. (they warm up so quick with no coolant)
THE QUESTION: Before I replace the cam, lash pads and rockers. Is there anything else I should check? Would a compression test reveal valve damage? The cam has a small amount of wear but I have seen worse on vehicles that are quieter. Much quieter. and a new cam may be expensive or hard to source, so I want to eliminate as much as I can by testing first.
My next step will be the 'lash pads' 'shims' what is the correct term for these? and checking the rockers and the wipe pattern. But I had to leave the vehicle for today and want to return to it tomorrow armed with as many ideas as possible.
Thanks in advance.
