Currently driving a 1972 BMW 1602 as my daily. Don't ask about previous cars - there have been way too many and I stopped counting at 160!

Just a quick note... the 3k wasn't for a first car. It was so someone maybe with a bit of disposable cash (or access to credit) that wanted to get in to what we do didn't end up with some snotter that made them regret every decision in life that lead up to this point but also didn't bankrupt them to the point where they couldn't enjoy themselves further with it. However the lower price point and insurable nature is definitely more in line with what I'd expect younger people to be looking at. Really though the problem there isn't the purchase price on a car that can be fun, it is 100% an insurance issue. Saying kids don't have 3k to spend on a car is kind of wrong, kids spend nearly 3k on cars... they just spend 80% of it on insurance :/ Also another point of order, no one is on Snapchat any more, get with the program grand dad This thread has been great so far, exactly what I'd have hoped from the community when I asked. Interesting discussion points and car choice I wouldn't have thought of. You're all grand!

From personal experience, when my daughter was learning to drive at the age of 17, nine years ago, we started to look around for a car that was going to be cheap, basic ( to look after/less to go wrong) and with a reputation for being, well, reliable. After looking at countless Fiestas, Polos and the like I eventually spied on of these on Gumtree..... it was a red 1992 Toyota Starlet 1000cc. It sounded interesting so I went to have a look and found a rock solid little car with no power steering but an electric sunroof that worked so smoothly you thought it belonged to a Bentley or something. The lad selling it was doing so because he didn't like it so I offered him a cash there and then deal and he accepted. I got it for £370. It ran for over two years, flew through two MOTs and took my girl anywhere and everywhere (slowly) without fuss and without ever breaking down, even when the gearbox began to make 'I am eating myself' noises, it still kept going until she found another car. It cost her just over £700 to insure and it sipped fuel and was pretty cool actually. The point of the post is to demonstrate that you must look everywhere and anywhere for that bargain starter retro, they can be surprisingly cheap, the average Joe doesn't know what we know, to them they are old bangers, you can cost it all in AND make it more individual as and when. My girl has gone through moderns now, new cars etc but that Starlet is the one that she loved driving the most. It actually was the car that really got her into cars, Retro cars, my cars and Allegros and stuff!! Start em young and watch them get snared with the bug!!

Also another point of order, no one is on Snapchat any more, get with the program grand dad They're not on snapchat??? so what the hell are they on, honestly I can't keep up seems that no sooner have I got a handle on what my kids are doing they go and change the rules again...bloody kids !!! Anyway on the subject of insurance, my son has been looking at quotes . .. I found him a few cars to try out: 1996 tigra - £1100 insurance 2004 Clio - £899 insurance 1993 AX - £2500 insurance!!!! ridiculous on the old AX why would it be that high, I was expecting around the clio price ... He got roughly the same quote on my '65 Viva, I was amazed.

I didn't know that the old Fiat Pandas were still so cheap. We didn't/don't get them here in the US. I'd really like to import one and then hunt for the four wheel drive system that Puch made for them. Not sure it it's easily retrofitted into the non four wheel drive models though...
This probably should have its own thread, but is just a reminder to appreciate what's common to you where you live...

I think Metros would be a cool first car. You can go old school with classic mini upgrades or new school with the k-series options 1.1 k-series for £1295 1.1 k-series for £400 - engine fault 1.0 A-series for £1950 1.8 k-series for £2250

With the slight opening up of regs by our benevolent dictator the 6n polo, particularly the 1.4 16v must be a shoe in... Proper little go-kart with 100bhp and i've always thought looked good straight out of the box Also benefits from good & cheap spares availability and a strong club and show scene with plentiful modding opportunities to entice the starter into the rabbit hole that is retro rides...

That Ax GT is sadly going to be a world of pain judging by the huge hole in the sill. You'd be several thousand into that to make it mint and it's not worth modifying. This. It's also why I didn't recommend a Mini. Yes you can get one for £3k but IMHO and from what I've seen, you'd be buying a world of pain. A car with Oversills needing to be changed, a car with its fair share of 'get me home' bodges done to it in all areas, like the wiring, the carbs, leaks from the engine etc. . For a starter the last thing you want is someone else's bodgery or a legacy of bodgery in a car. I've been there with some MOT'd stuff and TBH it's no fun. That can be enough to put people off buying a retro in the future, and I know it has been for a few guys. To me, a starter classic should be in decent enough condition to sort out in a few minor areas, as well as for one to do a few mods as well. Most people won't want a resto on their hands, especially one which involves unpicking a lifetime of bodgery. Hmmm, the new category? In that case, the NB MX-5 still fits. It's tight to get a non-rotbox for £1.5k but they do still turn up. In line with the E46 thread earlier they are around the right kind of money, as long as you don't go chasing for a 330i ; these have definitely crept up in value over the past year or two. But a decent 328i is a bit of the gem, and still available for £1k without being a total shed. Rovers are also very sensible cash unless you're after a Tomcat. Pug 106s are good, but I reckon a Saxo VTR or 106 Quiksilver are the better bets for a starter car. I really enjoyed my old 106, even if it was a shed. That cost me £800 back in 2011. Yes, the GTis have gone up since then but the Quiksilvers and Saxo VTRs are sensible and cheaper to run: forum.retro-rides.org/thread/113427/1998-peugeot-106-tatty-dailyThe one thing to remember is these were even then an old design ; they're an AX underneath and it shows.

I hadn't mentioned the 6N due to the age of the car but they're plentiful cheap and decent little cars. The (non-turbo) diesel is legendarily strong and frugal. The one to look out for is the 'Open Air' model with full length sunroof;

Mk2 Fiesta insurance £2000 unmodified... Rad Panda £1200 to insure. That's quite interesting for only a few years difference and otherwise A.N.Other small old car. Trying to find that info is a pain in the ***** as you have to get quotes for every option. But a saving of a grand on insurance is massive and would probably be a deal breaker for most people, unless you know that there are choices that are so much cheaper BTW your son has good taste

I was using comparison sites (which is a risky strategy, but most specialist companies don't want new drivers if it's their only car) but what was obvious is that assuming anything with a small engine would be cheap(ish) is wrong. Get a quote before you buy!

Get a quote before you buy! This. The problem is small, cheap to buy/run cars will be bought by young drivers and crashed, so the risk (in the insurance companies eyes) goes up for small cars. Something bigger or leftfield may be a better bet insurance wise. K10/K11 Micras were good a few years back, not sure now.......
