Has anyone seen a build thread or video of a FWD car which was originally of monocoque design, where the floorpan/wheelbase from a longer car has been shortened to fit under a different upper shell?
I'm working on a track project at the moment to shorten the length of a floorpan by approx 280mm to fit under a retro upper shell. It would be interesting to see other people's approaches to it.

Sort of an inverse way how they stretch cars (for Limo versions)? Mount on a sliding jig, chop, slide apart by the required amount, insert metal to suit.
I'd guess you'd probably chop the rear footwells out at a guess to get that sort of shortening - depends on the shell and how the rear axle is attached though.

Yes, thats pretty much it. To shrink the proportions of the car. I may eventually want to go through the loopholes to get it road registered, so keeping acceptable leg room to the rear seats is important to me. I think i may need to lose some length from the rear footwell, some from the rear bench, and a small amount from the front end, one side of the bulkhead or the other. obviously I'm keen to make the shortenings in the same areas where factory joints exist to maintain strength. The rear footwell is the easiest as there is a spot welded seam which can be drilled out allowing the floorpan to be slid back slightly with minimal knock on effects.
I've seen the project binky series, but other examples of how people have jigged things would be great for ideas.
I'm hoping to get a chassis table put together over the next few weeks.

If you're considering getting it on the road, then I'd have thought passing IVA would be higher priority than rear passengers? I may have the wrong end of the stick here but if I was making something funky for the track, I'd be considering a cage, so tough luck to rear seat passengers - but maybe that's just me

Phil, I don't know why those two goals need to be mutually exclusive? If I shorten the floorpan by entirely removing the rear leg room, then it would also have the effect of putting a B pillar in my field of vision. If I shorten it in a couple of places, hopefully I can retain something close to the original seating position, rear leg room and desired wheelbase, and still make it suitable for a future IVA if needed.

Google Mazda 100e, called the Mongrel by URCHFAB quite interesting info, Thanks v8ian, I've been following this one. He's keeping the wheelbase the same as the MX5. Due to the forgiving design of the 100e rear arches though, he has some room to play with which sadly i don't on a regular radiused arch. Appreciate the suggestion though, i've definitely got a lot of tips from watching it.

They’re not mutually exclusive- it’s when you said it going to be a track toy I was thinking of the easiest option namely cutting it out of one area.

Possible the most info on floorpan shortening might be beach buggy builds, since many are built on shortened beetle pans, whilst not a monocoque the techniques will be similar, the usual way seems to be staggering the cuts and not just straight across. Ttfn Glenn

I remember as a teenager reading Car and Car Conversions a guy who'd built an SD1 into a rally car. They shortened it to the same wheelbase as a mk2 Escort. IIRC, they took the length out of the rear floor pan too. The proportions looked good (to a teenager in the late 80's).

What car is the chassis and running gear from ? A lot of cars have flat inner sills with straight edges once the outers have been removed. You cold use these to line things up or even attatch some sort of guide arrangement to them. I know some cars that are tapered along their length so the sills might end up overlapping. Haynes manuals often have underside shots in them which might give you a way to sit and think about it.

I put a mini shell on a shortened sierra 4x4 floor pan.... Never again. Just a thought if you build it as a pick-up / van the IVA is so much cheaper and easier...
