Evening,
I'm hoping someone can tell me why some oil pump pickups have a shroud over the mesh, and some don't?
I have bought a more shallow sump for my engine and the pickup sits at a perfect depth for the sump when the shroud is removed.
Thanks!

VW I assume? I fitted a shallow sump to my TDI and the pickup was shrouded, came with the sump

Yep, it's a 1600 Polo 6N engine. MK2 sumo fits and is more shallow, and to be honest I'm almost certain the oil pump is the same as a MK2 aside from the shroud.

I reckon it is. As long as it has mesh it should be ok. Its a small block most of the stuff is identical or very similar same works with big block engines. Do you have access to the MK2 pickup no?

I can buy a new MK2 pump, but my 6n one is almost new so I'll just roll with it.
I'm still curious as to what the shroud actually does, but I can't seem to find anything out!
Thanks

Does the pump have the pickup attached or bolt on?

It's a chain driven pump with the pickup bolted on.

Old engines used to have big old flat oil pick up's with a mesh. Big surface area to get all that oil in even if the mesh becomes partially blocked. The trouble is that as soon as any part of that mesh sees a bit of air during oil surge, all suction of oil is lost, so big gulp of air and no oil pressure. More modern engines tend to have a domed pick up with a mesh and shroud with a hole the size of the pick up pipe at the bottom so in the case of oil surge there is less chance of picking up air and oil surge knocking the crank out but because of the domed mesh it still has the same surface area.
That's my thinking anyway 😁

Yep definitely use the shroud. I've bent them to fit before in balance shaft delete conversions etc. and no worries.

The thinking behind the shroud is sound logic. It's no different to drinking from a straw. If your straw gets a pinhole above the surface of your drink, the lighter and easier substance (air in this case) will be sucked up. Oil pickup tubes will be no different in this case .
