Aldi have a small inverter welder for sale at £40. It's claimed that it can weld 2.5mm rods, I understand that a 2.5mm rod will weld 2.5mm thick steel when on a arc welder, is an inverter welder the same? I'd like to build a swing away spare wheel carrier for a 4x4, so I'm hoping this will be up to the task? I know I can hire, but my welding skills are very rusty, weren't too good to start with, so the hire charges as I relearn how to weld will be quite high.....! Unless there's some kind soul who'll join the bundle of metal I've cut together for a few beer tokens.....? aldiAnd what's the difference between inverter and arc? Thanks

that is an arc welder.
not especially suitable for car stuff, ok for farm and building site construction and heavy pipe work, car stuff is typically mig welding.

I bought one at that price simply because its so portable and light. Your spare wheel carrier will be made of thicker steel than a cars body so should be fine for that job. As said, no good for car panels & thinner materials.

As above good for 2-3mm steel - thicker with multiple passes, practice and bevels. However in my experience an inverter welder Arc or Mig is a LOT easier to use to get good results. - Make you look like you know what you are doing ! You will need to allow another £20 or so for an auto darkening mask though as those hand held things are pointless and you will just get frustrated. Take a look at the stick (arc) welding tutorial here www.mig-welding.co.uk/arc-tutorial.htm

Probably. At the bottom end of the price range they are all much the same (though never seen one that cheap!)- don't expect it to last long but it should work. I suggest more safety kit than the demo guy. Make sure you take the protective film from BOTH sides of the screens though..

I suggest more safety kit than the demo guy. Yeah, my six pack is in the fridge getting cold, so yeah, a bit more clothing when I'm welding! Thanks for the advice, about the helmet...……

And I ordered one, only for a refund to appear in my bank account a couple of days later. Sold out! B**l*cks.
There are machines that look identical on Ebay, but from dispatched from China, it's a long way to go, to get a refund if it fails.
