got up this morning and my old 1.7 diesel astra woulnt start, its been sluggish for a while and it seemed the battery only had enough for a quick 5 second start. luckily it has always manage to catch and always started but not this morning. So I though the old battery must be shot, I put a tester on it when the engine was running and got nearly 14 volts so I guess the alternator is ok. I bought a new battery and went to start it and....well nothing, got dash lights got headlights but it wont even turn over. my thoughts are now drifting towards the starter any thoughts anyone thanks

It’s a Vauxhall of a certain age - if it has a braided earth cable then assume that’s had it. I got a free Nova that way!
Test with a good jump lead from battery -ve straight to the engine block. If it still won’t spin then the starter is likely.

I possibly might have one, what model year is the Astra? is it the Vauxhall based DR/DTL engine or the Isuzu TD engine, there were also variations on engine number I think

ALL SORTED NOW new starter and battery and off she went very fiddly job to do, only two bolts, one from underneath the car and the other under the battery tray. took nearly an hour to fiddle getting the new one in as space was very tight
