I know this isn’t anything new for these as there a heavy car and it’s auto bug we have noticed it’s considerably worse in the last 6-12 months.
*yesterday I put £15 in and I don’t think it’s even done 80 miles before the light came on again*
There is also an idle problem, it ticks over lumpy and sometimes cuts out. On initial start up it had to be gently revved till it warms. It also judders on first set off (in good and bad weather) as if it’s struggling for fuel for a few seconds.
We’ve had this car a long time and it’s coming up to 100,000 miles. We just need it to last a few months more before we can afford to replace it

As fuel is 1.30 per litre - x 4.54 = 5.90 per gallon £15 = 2.54 Gallons 80/2.54 = 31.5 MPG as you make no mention of the type of driving stop/start night/day wet/dry - Near 32MPG with winter driving for a 1.6 Auto Golf does not sound too far off. Old car cold damp weather - misfires - long warm up times high alternator loads etc. etc etc. When was it last given a really good service? Leads breaking down is a popular one - connections having higher resistances a million and one things likely. Give it some TLC - Pump the tyres up. See if a brake is binding.

Had an oil and filter change in September Plugs and leads about 2 years ago. Break binding could be a possibility as we’ve always had problems with the rear calipers

Get it on VCDS (reader) and reset the throttle body. Also have a look at the MAF sensor, cheap as chips and a five minute job. Rear calipers have a tendency to get sticky handbrake actuator, easily sorted with a set of grips and some release spray. But as said 31.5mpg on a heavy under powered slush-box seems about right.

Check the state of all the air pipes, and breather system. They are prone to breaking down and causing air leaks. The usual symptoms sound very similar to what you describe

12 months ago your £15 would have taken you 90 miles at the same MPG ....
