So the MOT is due on my 1990 Renault 5, but none of the windows open, they're all wedged shut with various rawl plugs, bits of wood etc. and the winders have been removed. they've all broken this year!
The mechanisms are knackered, but as it's a five door with all-round keep fit windows it's nigh on impossible to get replacements as it seems most of the surviving supercinq's are GT Turbos which are two door.
Basically will it be a MOT failure? I did a quick google, but got conflicting results :/

Here in Ireland that's a fail, not sure why though. What part has failed? Could you not get something made to fit?

My Volvo has gone through the MOT several years running with one electric window not working. It's disconnected behind the door card as the switch works for down but not for up and it saves forgetting that fact and having to take the door card off to wind it back up. My old BX had a similar issue I had taken the winder handles off as there was a hole in the regulator track (made of pure unobtanium) and the glass would fall out if you opened the window. That also passed it's MOT like that just after the new harsher MOT regs came in.

Provided the front doors open from both the inside & outside & the rears open from the outside, your ok, in respect of the mot. Opening windows only comes into it if the door handles don’t work - but that’s another story for later.........

Never had a window tested in all the MOTs I've done! Could carry a brick on the passenger seat, just in case you need to bail quick?

Think my last two MOTs needed at least 1 window on each side of the car to open. Didnt matter front or rear, but had to be each side.

My previous cars had plastic window panes screwed into the frames. Never failed an MOT!

Well just to follow this up, took it for the MOT today and it's sailed through, well, except for an advisory for an oil leak, I'll try to get the windows fixed before next summer though.
