After the Retro Rides Instagram post I have been looking at these a fair bit now. I had seen this car previously but let it pass me by. I’ve been looking at quirky small J tin for some time now. I’m also about to set up a new business and need something eye catching and possibly for load carrying and cheap to run. Anyways what do we know about them??

I must admit that I've been looking at them for a while now, I think it was @automatik that put me on to them in the first place about a year ago

You'll be incredibly hard pressed to find a 1st gen Wagon R in the UK now. They seem to have all gone, which means you're left with the later Vauxhall Agila version.

Never had one but I love these little rollerskates - especially the asymmetric mk1s. (1 door on one side, 2 on the other) There are two widths of car — because of the Kei car rules in Japan the mk1s and some mk2s are a few inches narrower, and that's not just axle width - the whole body is narrower. Badge engineered versions like the Vauxhall Agila are all the wider version made for export that had engines bigger than the Kei limited 600cc. It's also worth considering the Daihatsu Move or the later Malaysian version rebadged as the Perodua Kenari as they have a very similar level of cute / van-like proportions. Lastly - there's already a pretty good thread on here on RetroRides with more custom, photoshopped ones and whatnot

It checks out - Someone with the right welding/bodywork chops could make a superb Van-agonR if they had the inclination... 100% would rock this

Were always popular up here for the reasons you mention, cheap to run and masses of space. Great engines. Weirdly I found the mk1 1.0 better than the 1.3, much more revy. Gearboxes have a reputation for weak 2nd, but I think that's more down to the owners, and lack of maintenance, no one ever changes the oil, including Suzuki. Always thought of putting an Ignis Sport engine and box in, but too many projects on the go already. Iain

This thread reminds me of a house I drive past now and then, with no less than 4 Wagon R's on the drive
