I broke my old Record no3 swivel vice today, absolutely gutted, my own fault, I thought it was indestructible but using a bar on the handle cracked it in two, I have had it for years. So I need a new vice, any recommendations will be appreciated, it has to have a swivel base, minimum of 4”/100mm wide jaws, budget up to about £100 maybe a little bit more if needed. What are the ebay vices like? anyone using them and found limitations or quality issues? I dug out an old spare but it is to big and not a swivel. It is very old and weighs almost as much as an engine block. It is now temporarily clamped to my bench till I find a replacement for the old Record no.3 This will be a little project to strip, clean, paint and reassemble, just because it is old, well made and deserves it.

Why on earth do you need it to swivel? You have the perfect vice right there if you ask me! Won't break that in a hurry.

I’ve restored a couple for the rebuilt workshop. Neither are swivels though, most older ones aren’t. This is the ‘fighting cockatoos’ one I got off a mate. Interesting spec, Ex British Gas service van with removable pipe jaws. This one has sentimental value as it was my granddads who was a plant engineer, big 6x8 size, quick release. As part of the refurb I finally found someone in Sheffield making new jaws for the external bolt engineers vices, so it’s as good as new now. They look great, nice work restoring them, never seen the pipe holder addition before, must be very rare and very useful when needed. Why on earth do you need it to swivel? You have the perfect vice right there if you ask me! Won't break that in a hurry. I could not manage without one now, so useful it is almost never used in the straight position. I looked at making a plate to adapt the swivel base from the broken vice but the Parkinson is to big. The bench is not that wide so the swivel option means I can hold work wider than the bench, I would love to permanently fit it but most of the vice use is light work, it is a shame because the Parkinson is a lovely old piece of iron, I will restore it to its former glory for the future though.

My Favourite vice? Hookers and coke! We have a pair of Record swivel vices on our bench at work and I genuinely can't recall the last time we needed to swivel one!

Hmm...vices. May I recommend Ermita in the lovely city of Manila? Unfortunately, my vice is called Stanley... It swivels, it grips, but it does feel a bit, well... However the choice here is between expensive, cheap Chinese or cheap, cheap Chinese. I went expensive, as at least they spelt the name right. To be fair, it's done a good bit of work and, once you swill the rat pee off it, it's as good as new. Oh, and they do a superb cordless drill as well No battery problems there. I'd love an old school Record vice though. Well...you did ask.

Thats my winter holiday destination sorted.
"It swivels, it grips, but it does feel a bit, well..." what? I had a look at Stanley, they look ok, very similar to Magnusson sold by Screwfix so not sure about them.
If all possible makes and models were lined up together it would be easy to choose but thats not possible. So far I have eliminated the cheap ebay unbranded stuff, same with Clarke they look like the same vices with Clarke stickers and double price.
Couple of Draper still on my shortlist and Irwin Record look the best but obviously more expensive

I have this one as I couldn't find an old one to suit my needs at a sensible price. It isn't massive and it whilst it isn't built to the standard of a 1950s Record you'd probably have to really go some to break it. The swivel is pretty useful, I've found. www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-125mm-bench-vice-cvr125b/You can also get a red one which will no doubt work a bit quicker.

All of mine are old Records, I love seeing tools with Made in Britain or England on them

It is looking more likely that it will be one of these Irwin Records, that is the modern version of what I broke so the natural replacement, best price I can find too, thanks.

Avoid the machine mart ones listed above they're junk. I bust the swivel plate on one then the jaws themselves broke. Replaced it with an old record vice from eBay for the same price and it's far better quality.

Guess I am much more lenient than you! I would have preferred an older one but couldn't find one nearby. This does the job fine for me.

In general older vices are made from better quality steel. Record, Parkinson, Fortis and Woden are some of the best makes, I wont mention Swindens as they are big money Record are well known so attract more money I use a 1930's Fortis most days still works fine, I also have Czech Republic made York I cant fault www.york.cz/en/workshop-bench-vices-york-text These often sell on Ebay for more than they are new! You problem is the swivel, Woden and Record both made swivel bases you bolt on I would also consider this Record 74, prices are allover the place winchboy paid £50 for his www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Record-Auto-Vice-No-74-Complete-with-Base-Plate/142942755739?hash=item21480d5b9b:g:XB4AAOSw38VboAN6:rk:1:pf:0If you are local I do have a few spares in the garage including a Woden swivel base, but that only fits one size of vice. Personally I would just keep using the Parkinson you have un till one turns up York with swivel base 1970/80's? My spare swivel base, its branded Woden but may fit others? Some of my spare vices!

That is a fine collection of vices, thanks for the tips I have not seen the York vices before. I am as you say using the Parkinson while I look for the right one. I viewed a new Irwin Record no3 but it looks to small now I have the Parkinson clamped to the bench so that is off the list now, the next size up new, doubles in price. This Draper looks good and it can be fitted with a swivel base but I want to see one before committing, they can be found cheaper than on the link. www.drapertools.com/product/45783/150mm-Engineers-ViceIn the mean time I am also looking for a good used vice if one comes up on ebay, York will added to the search. Thanks again for your advice.

Thanks winchman. Having the Parkinson means I am in no hurry so just waiting for the right vice to come available locally, understandably not many want to post a large cast iron vice. Also needs to have good condition jaws. There is a second hand tools shop near me that I still have to visit but warming to the Parkinson each time I use it and so far managing without the swivel option, there is a good chance the Parkinson will get stripped, cleaned, painted, new jaws and permanently bolted to the bench.
