which currently allows a rolling 40 year period for the fitment of black and silver number plates. Well I for one stand corrected then. I have always believed plate style is strictly limited to the correct age car. Cheers for posting that. So did I. I thought the reflective plates were introduced as a safety measure. I think, as Shaun says, this was unintentional and will, eventually, be changed. |

Reflective plates were indeed introduced as a safety measure, and the majority of new cars would have had them several years before they became mandatory in 1973 because they highlighted how new the car was. My Dad's new Morris 1300 had reflective plates from new in 1970, for example.

I asked DVSA and got this response: Hi Steve The Manual states in Section 0.1 “Registration plates may display white, grey or silver characters on a black background – only on vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1978” This is in line with Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001, which currently allows a rolling 40 year period for the fitment of black and silver number plates. This was an unintended consequence of a change to the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 to allow a rolling 40 year exemption from MOT test for historical vehicles. Unless this is amended, which I keep being told it will, but I guess Brexit gets in the way, from 1 April 2019, the date will become 1 January 1979. DVLA write information leaflets to try and simplify legislation - a couple of years ago, they said that black & silver plates could be fitted to historic VED class vehicles because that's how they understood Schedule 2 Part 3 of The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. Unfortunately no-one has actually rewritten the regulation to agree yet! It's not the first balls up DVLA have made and won't be the last - how about the one that says you can't tow a trailer if your cars VIN plate doesn't show a towing weight? They've amended it slightly after complaints but it still says: "If your VIN plate doesn’t list a train weight, you should not use your vehicle for towing." www.gov.uk/towing-with-car/weight-and-width-limits |

Or EU regs stating that you can't use two different fuels in a car at the same time. OK in itself (ignoring electricity for the moment), but it lists Nitrous Oxide as a fuel!!!!!!
