After years of not using them and being cynical I've finally bought an oil extractor to save mucking about uphill at the side of the road under heavy cars.. IE nowhere to service. My logic is: Regular changes with filter Even if dropping at the sump some curse word sits there It's fast and painless The oil filter is there for a reason I can do the odd sump plug drop at the tyre shop for beer tokens if they're not busy. It's a Pele 6l one. Not the best I know but I'm on a budget. Views?.... Be nice because I've talked myself in to it and using it for the first time this week.

On some cars you get no choice anyway.
They're very handy for many things TBH!

Depends on the car - if your probe will go all the way to the bottom of the sump then great. Personally, I’m a believer.
First time using it, get what you can out with the extractor then undo the sump plug and measure what’s left - if only a dribble or three then you know job’s a good’un next time.
EDIT: forgot to mention, I pulled the trigger on a mityvac from the states when it was reduced on American amazon recently, as I have decided to start building up my collection of quality tools and car maintenance aids at my parents’ ready for when we immigrate back to the UK - and thought this would be invaluable for easier fluid changes. My one can also squirt fresh fluid back into gearboxes / diffs etc. - which hardly any others can do (I.e. are extractors only).
When I eventually get to use it, I’ll post the experience on here

I use a Pela, the one shaped like a football, and it works great. It's slow though, but that gives you more time to drink tea.

I will be getting one of these after I've swapped my sump pan. Update us on how you get on with it.

I used to use one for the Arosa as it was kinda low and this made oil changes much easier than trying to jack it up!
I did have a bit of a guilty feeling each time I used it in a kind of nagging 'tsk tsk, you should be draining the oil really..' so know how you feel. Worked though and seemed to pull out the correct quantity of oil!

I bought a Laser oil pump. It was complete garbage so I made a pneumatic one from a garden sprayer, its got great suction.

You just need a vacuum generator, the rest is just bits of pipe, I added a pneumatic switch because I had one but its not essential.
I originally fitted it to the Laser suction tool I bought but it just collapsed the bottle, these garden sprayers are much stronger and its big enough to take any engine worth of oil in one go.
The vac generator I used was a fancy leftover one from work but there are very simple ones available, they are just a venturi really, a cheap chinese one should be just as good.
Just connect to compressor, pop the pie in an engine, diff, gearbox etc, switch on and go. Not much air demand, a small compressor will be fine.

Been having a look at them online, I've got an old vacuum brake fluid sucker that I rescued from work that doesn't seem to work, May open it up and see can I salvage the workings for a bigger unit could you post a few more price if possible, looks great and well engineered compare to most junk cheap ones. Could you make the garden sprayer work in reverse and have vacuum unit?

I've tried the Pela one from RetroWarwicK, and it's great. I've used it to vac out a few things on my Merc now.

Some cars such as some smart cars don't have a sump plug so they're needed.
I don't use mine often but it's a great bit of kit. I also suck out the old oil from the oil filter housing (element type - not spin on type) as sometimes you can have a fair few hundred ML in the housing too.
