There is a lollipop lady does the crossing at a school about half mile from my house. She seems to have zero concept of the idea of traffic flow. She will just stop the traffic let a bunch of kids cross & then instead of going back to the pavement to allow cars to clear, she will just stand there waiting for the next kid, that is like 50 meters away. It’s literally chaos for about 20 mins the street is just her work place; the kids are her traffic. When you have a couple hundred kids leaving at the same time there's going to be chaos however you try to manage them!

That took me far longer than 20mins!

Cant remember such a cable laden street since the old telegraph poles were around Don't worry, they are alive and well. I remember as a kid my mother was given luncheon vouchers by her work and I went and used them at was the only burger place in town - Wimpy .... And some spent them on other things... I can remember when practically every road, certainly every main road, was lined with telegraph poles: They were wonderful for providing a guide as to where the road went, especially in foggy conditions ... until the point where the road turned a corner and the poles continued their line across the field, swiftly followed by you! We have them too. Handy... Or even better...

Not so much a roadside icon, but when did you last see one of these sat on top of a telegraph pole?

End of sorry dude, that was firmly tounge in cheek, i have a school round the corner from me and i fully understand the chaos it causes, but my neice and nephew are a different breed. Actualy, just the nephew. Headcase.

I hear rumours some of them are still around but certainly not as many as there once were There are plenty local to me, and 2 friendly female versions guide us across at my sons school! They are very aware of the traffic flow, maybe not old enough to not give two foxes! lol

Out for a nice B-road blast in the MX5, and found this in one of the local outlying villages - a phone box, and this one still has a phone in it! No idea if it works though. Not far from this one, discovered another - again, still with a phone in it!

Apart from a few on preserved lines, these are going fast. This one is on a disused line possibly coming back into use, but undoubtedly will be replaced by a barrier if it does.

Walked past a village pump, cant be many still around Quite normal here. I don't have pics, as I think sometimes they are invasive. Radstock and the surrounding villages were once a thriving coal mineing area, after the pits closed, the buildings began to fall into decay and were, one by one flattened and all evidence erased. Luckily Radstock saved a winding wheel with its headframe, making them a feature in the Towns centre, along with the only remaining slag/spoil heap, which I find quite a powerful reminder of this industrial community. Powerful indeed. Strip mining, Borneo style They just decimate the jungle.

Remember seeing hitchhikers every now and then when i was on long trips in the car with my dad. never seen one since i started driving back in 2005 I frequently pick up hitch-hikers because I sometimes hitch myself. I've met a lot of interesting people both ways. Have often got rides with middle aged and older women who proceed to tell me that they seldom pick up hitch-hikers. Got a ride with a couple of tattooed skinheads once. They looked a bit dodgy but I'd been standing by that motorway ramp for a long time and they turned out to be normal enough blokes. I've picked up a lot of foreigners travelling the world on the cheap too. Had some very interesting discussions about their home countries and their experiences on their travels. One English chap reckoned my '71 Wolseley reminded him of his granddad's Rover.
