When did you last see kids on home built bikes or go karts? Kids... outside! No no no, we’ve come up wit ways of mind control and dumbing down, so computer screens it is Not to mention that massive implications of health and safety now in place, and then I’m sure there’d be some stupid law about construction and use On a public road of such vehicles We’re no longer allowed to have fun, just keep on checking in to your social media and all will be ok 🙈🤦♀️🤯😩😩

we would spend all evening rolling down two slopes on our estate then spend the next day rebuilding our trollies, just to go back out the next night and do the same. another victim to the health and safety, must be those crazy spinning castrol signs that would stand on the path outside motor aids or auto parts shop, just waiting to chop young fingers off 803b Castrol GTX Garage Sign by Robert Knight, on Flickr

Theres definatly less half a mile long stretches of unwound casette tape tangled in the shrubs at the side of A roads these days, though discarded CDs are still popular round here.

Common sense, that’s another rarity these days
Bin men whistling a tune and actually emptying your bin, not complaining it doesn’t close flat and it it’s 20cm too far away from the roadside for them to be able to attempt a collection
The hum of the milk float at 5am and your milk frozen and exploded out the top of the foil lid
Being woken on a Sunday morning to the sound of the rag n bone man
Chimney sweepers
Having your coal delivered on the back of that rickety old wagon by that black guy that was white when he set off
The pop guy that delivered your pop in glass bottles like the milkman
I’ve probably steered away from stuff at the roadside slightly but what. Reminder of how much the computer runs our lives now...

On the positive side you no longer have to put up with bin men spilling rubbish down the garden path from a split bin bag.

No he didn’t grow up in a musical, he grew up in a great time just like me & the bin men didn’t spill rubbish out of bin liners, because it wasn’t in bin liners, it was in a ‘proper’ metal dustbin which they carried to the van. No liners in sight

No liners in sight I can remember binmen carrying huge bins on their shoulders, which they got from your back garden and put back again! I can also remember when you had post three times a day. Early morning (before you went to work/school, mid day, and occasionally an afternoon delivery. Also chimney sweepers will be making a come back with all the wood burning stoves

I remember the birds nicking the cream out the top of the milk bottles! we still have plenty of chimney sweeps in Lincolnshire as its still pretty common to have coal/wood burners as the main heating source for the house
The paraffin man coming round doing home deliveries used to be a regular in our street
Ok not a road side icon but how about window cleaners with those funny little pointy top ladders! probably banned now with elf an saferty!

Not an electrical device to be seen strapped to them, we’d play football.. in real time, with our jumpers for goal posts, climb trees without been yelled it’s dangerous, build dens in woods miles and miles from where we lived, Pester people for their pram wheels to build bogeys ( cars constructed from pallet wood) and race them down the steepest hill, we’d only go home for dinner, and as the steeet lamps turned on! If we were caught misbehaving even the neighbour would give you a clip round the head, 😂 My kids get up in a morning and switch on an Xbox, then vegetate in front of it till night time, minimal movement or speech. None of that up at 6, breakfast and rush out on your bike to go knock on your friends door and all get together and actually interact. Whole world is just glued to a device like some sort of zombie apocalypse, can’t drive without checking what your new best buddy in Australia is having for his tea, or what cute picture of his cat he’s taken?!? See them all about town with screens glued to their faces or taking photos of absolutely everything and documenting every second of their pittyful existence.

I can't believe that we are three pages in and no one's mentioned the old style parking meters. (Before pay & display). Though, I think that the pay and displays will give way to paying by phone before we know it too.

One thing I never did and now regret it was to photograph our kids all over the town we live in, many of the sights have now gone, the Sweet shop, Cobblers, the old chap selling Mr Wriggleys to the kids. We should all record the area we live in. I often thought of getting each shop staff to stand outside, wish I had now. Went to a bike meet last night and was disappointed they all had white hair and show room bikes, winchboy was the only one under 25, I don't think the young people can afford them any more? I went in a bike shop yesterday that smelt of oil, he even thinks he has some bits for our 30 odd year old bikes in the back as they aren't on the computer!.
Off to the shed to put my soap box away and build a pram wheel go kart, shouldn't we have a thread for a kids go kart build?

We should all record the area we live in. I agree with this, I'm still hanging onto my 30s, and I don't think you appreciate at the time how fast things will actually change. For example when I was kid, all the houses on estates looked fairly uniform, 30 years later, they are a random collection of upvc and different extensions. Durham City has totally changed from a living working class City, where did you all your shopping etc, into a tourist/student area with nothing for locals. The BBC Computer Doomsday project actually did this in the early 1980s and you can still see the old photos of various places

half a mile long stretches of unwound casette tape tangled in the shrubs at the side of roads. Aftermath by Michael Jones, on Flickr An Invalid car by Ronnie Macdonald, on Flickr these ugly monsters gasometres, ruled the skyline of most big Citys, Bath had three, but only one remains (even that might have gone.) as a kid walking pass the gas works was not nice, it stank of eggy gas. Gas Storage Tank by John O, on Flickr The paraffin man coming round doing home deliveries used to be a regular in our street. Baptist Mills April 2009 by singaporesal, on Flickr this was the Esso blue man, there was also was Pink paraffin vans, some hardware shops had outside coin operated machine selling paraffin to anyone all night!!! Road works lamps, Larger roadworks had a night watchman in his shelter, where have they all gone then ? and before all the hi-vis, good old BLACK donkey jackets worn by real workmen (oh, jack hammers...white finger...)
