we all know that once upon a time the roadsides had loads of AA or RAC call boxes, which have now all but vanished. along with the small one or two pump family run petrol station, along with some big brand names. Friskney, Lincolnshire by Martin, on Flickr The high street banks have slashed there branches, many became trendy pubs, whilst many small pubs closed or became curry houses/restaurants. we don't see bobbies on the beat, unless you count those blue banded nosey parkers, even a Supras being driven as an every day car is a very rare sight these days. (mine isn't) as i was going through some old threads on here, i came across a red mkiii Cortina parked along side a red phone box (which i now cant find) and it hit me at how bright the paint was on the box, then i realised many phone boxes have been removed, we all have mobile phones, when i was a kid i can remember people queuing outside the phone boxes around tea time (as we used to call it) 6.00 to 7ish so they could make calls. will they vanish all together...along with what other things we take for granted as an every day sight. this last one has become a village self help library and Bath have turned some of theirs into hanging flower huts best use of a town centre one is this next one so as i said... what other roadside every day icon could vanish from sight... do we even have as many of these as we use to ?

Not surprised there are fewer post boxes if they're all on the wonk like that Oddly, I drive past a place by the railway line that flog phone boxes... though I've never quite understood to whom. Maybe to double-barrelled Tarquins with enough room to install one in the Grand Hallway, or to complement the Ornamental Gardens? Certainly, I'm guessing the landed gentry are the only types with enough disposable to drop twelve and half grand (I kid you not!) on a refurbished phone box Link for veracity (I'm in no way associated with nor recommend this firm, just find it a fascinating oddity in an increasingly made world) www.unicornrestorations.com/Check out the "K2 Jubilee kiosk"!

It's strange what people want to own... These where taken down overhere last year and a couple of them got sold. They got so many interest in it, that they sold around a 1000 in the end. What you want with an old emergency roadside phone, i don't know, but they're now all gone

I used to frequent a bar in Menlo Park (California) called the British Bankers Club that had a red telephone box outside.

The city where I grew up/live near had a pretty big earthquake a few years ago, many buildings in the cbd fell down/got bowled over. It amazes me now when I drive around how unfamiliar it looks and how I am almost lost with the lack of landmarks that I didn't even realise were landmarks, but now that they are gone it's obvious I used them to find my way around! None of them were roadside icons as such but wow has the picture changed.

Police boxes... Most in Edinburgh have been converted into coffee/food stalls. I’m sure the one in the photo is where a ghost tour starts from (sure they keep odds and sods in it) I did see one for sale recently, part of the sale conditions stated that if you wanted to, you could remove it from its location.

Technically a vehicle, but seen more often than not parked up whilst the driver delivered milk/eggs/orange juice to customers. So I'm classing it as a roadside icon, so there. Have fond memories of watching these clink and clatter their way round the streets as I was on my way to school. Depending on the driver, they sometimes had a surprising turn of speed! I occasionally get stuck behind one of the few remaining in operation on my way to work. It's a shame more people don't have milk delivered - with modern EV technology I could easily see these making a comeback, with vastly improved performance and range so they don't hold anyone up.

Ah yes, the little chef 'early starter'. Dad would treat me to one nearly every time we went to a car show, race day or autojumble. Their sausages were unique, and their breaded mushrooms were awesome. Somehow stopping at a motorway services just wouldnt be the same.

We still have our milk delivered by a milkman And how can a thread include Little Chef yet make no mention of Jubilee Pancakes?

We still have our milk delivered by a milkman As do I. Although it arrives on the back of a 15 plate Transit now though. :/ I'd much rather it came on a rattly plastic electric wagon built on the same technology as mobility scooters.

Road works lamps - all roadworks were properly marked and barriered off with lamps which were filled with paraffin each evening & lit Larger roadworks had a night watchman in his shelter whom normally kept warm in winter with a industrial fire basket fuelled by coke - where have they all gone then ?
