Certainly not the most retro of cars, pretty modern compared to most on here, but certainly a bit different. So picked this up earlier today after winning it on eBay. Apparently only 600 of these were built and around 70 are left on the road. 55,000 miles and one previous owner, couple of tiny dents and some rust coloured stains on the drivers door but other than that seems to be all good. Spent some time after collecting it polishing a few scratches out and all in a pretty damn straight car. Not sure what the plans are yet, would like to find some more of the OE Speedline alloys or something similar and get some induction and exhaust going on for some nice noise. Or go the complete opposite way and just make it a really nice example of a relatively rare car. Either way, more pictures and cleaning will happen, but for now, here are a couple of photos of the new car. Seats are pretty cosy for a guy like me (6'4") but one of few cars where the seat doesn't have to be all the way back for me to fit in! It will be replacing the Seat in front of it, but not sure how to feel about that seen as it's fairly low miles!

Very nice car!! Looks very tidy, very clean. Never had one of these, but several Swifts, and i liked those a lot.
Induction and exhaust: do it!!! You can always put it back to stock, and a cone filter and some backbox will give you much"woop woop"!!!!
Very addictive sound,haha!!!
If you have some photos from the engine, and rear of the car, show us!!

Thanks @hotrodder, I didn't even know such a car existed before I found it for sale. It's pretty clean inside and out really, there are a few little marks but for the age of the car and the money I paid for it, that's not worrying me.
What was worrying me was watching my dad drive it home!
A main road closure and a diversion taking you down single lane tracks are not good, in fact, that very same recipe broke the exhaust on my Ibiza!
Didn't get much done to it today, but after a car show with my uncle in his Lincoln and before dinner, I did a little more polishing. - First cleaned up all the scratches around the door handle and attempted polishing around the badges on the back of the car. But then I got a lot of residue in the little gaps that I couldn't get back out. So will give that another go when I am better equipped! - Checked underneath as it had a rattle coming from the exhaust, just one of the heat shields rusted through where it bolts together. - Also coolant seems particularly low, will have to see if my dad has a bottle around that I can borrow some from. - Then polished the (probably Halfords) exhaust tip trim and the aerial to make them seem a little more bright and alive. - Headlights had done the usual yellow oxidising thing but a bit of polish soon sorted that.
Didn't get any before or after pics of that and haven't had the chance to plug the camera in anyway. But pictures of the back and engine bay will be here shortly!

So looking on the Internet for Baleno GSR related goodies, I found this! An original sales brochure specifically for the GSR! This was purchased immediately. Looking at the brochure I can see that the head unit is as supplied with the GSR model, as are the wheels and the exhaust trim piece I polished up. So here is a picture of the oh so important exhaust trim after the polish. And a picture of Ginge inspecting the new purchase. As you can see in the picture there is one issue with this car, the bottom of the drivers door is a little corroded. And this, as you will see in the during and after pictures, isn't as bad as it seems and is mostly staining. As you can see the rust stains were simply polished out with minimal effort really. Now this will be fixed after a couple more pay days, but for now I just wanted it tidied up. I even managed to grab pictures of the back and engine bay today! Now the back is certainly (in my opinion) more pretty than the front of the car. This back end reminds me and my dad both of another car that we are sure is Japanese and the same from the A pillars back, but we just can't figure it out! The engine bay is yet to be cleaned in this photo, though I have started now. What you are looking at here is a naturally aspirated, 16 valve, 4 cylinder J18A pumping out 119 BHP and 112 lb/ft of torque from 1839cc, in turn pulling along a car with an incredibly light kerb weight of 995KGs. Or at least that's what my sales brochure tells me! And looking in the boot I realised this must be a very reliable car, the button on the original tool bag is rusted tight!

Lovely cat,Ginge!!
I think you mean your car looks like the Daihatsu Charade of that period. I think underneath they're the same.
What displacement is your engine?
Keep the updates coming!!!!! We like!!!!!

Good save with the Baleno, you didn't see many when they were new, let alone 18 years later!
Back end reminds me of the Mazda 323 and AE92 Toyota Corolla (I've got ome!).
Bookmarked.

We like!!!!! Thanks, I hadn't seen that shape Charade before but that's definitely what it's based off I'm sure. The engine displacement is 1839 Cubic Centimetres / 1.8 Litres. Hopefully there will soon be some refurbed wheels and potentially an 'alternative' set of wheels, it'll need something to sit on when the others are refurbed after all. Thank you, I can't say I remember seeing one at all to be honest. As I say, didn't know about them at all until I saw it on eBay. I was thinking of an AE92, that I have seen! Although it turns out my dad was thinking of some sort of Proton GTI. Hopefully I make the bookmark worthwhile!

Car is now fully taxed and insured so I had to go out and get some pictures of it obviously! And I think on today's outing it may have hit the 55,000 mile mark. First drive was the commute to work, took it nice and easy. Noticed a bit of a roll when cornering and the heat shield got progressively louder. When at work I checked all tyre pressures and found passenger front was about 15 psi below. Looked at the heat shield and saw it was far worse than first thought, hanging off infact. It was rusted out where the bolts go through in 2 of 3 places and the last one was almost there too. I took it off before it fell off and went bouncing down the road.

I don't think they are related at all to the Daihatsu and they look quite different? Or did you get a different model Charade over there?

Nice car mister!
I've bought half of the other gsr which was on ebay after it didn't meet the reserve.
Volvosneverdie has the other half, so I've not really driven it yet. Quite looking forward to it!

Quite looking forward to it! Thank you! That one on eBay didn't look bad at all, I probably would have bid a little higher on it if I wasn't already taking up two of the two car spaces on our drive For a moment reading your comment, I thought you meant the seller had broken it up for spares! When you do get some time with it, could you possibly have a look in the rear wheel wells? My car has a couple of holes in the rear bumper where either a plastic wing liner or mud guard mounts and I'm not sure if I'm missing something! Suppose it'd be difficult with co-ownership but will there be a build thread? Or an appearance at the gathering? They are nice little cars and I reckon you'll really enjoy it! They feel very nibble and precise, though you can get a little oversteer if push it really hard. Then again, that could be the Chinese tyres on my car...

I don't think they are related at all to the Daihatsu and they look quite different? Or did you get a different model Charade over there? I'm not too sure now, maybe I'll have to try and find a charade and park next to it but to me at the very least the boot lid looks identical. And not forgetting how camera angle and a wide angle lens can make things look entirely different. For example, although the rear pillar looks like it is just as thick at the top as it is at the bottom, it does have a taper to it similar to that of the charade. I'll see if I can get a better rear end photo!

We had a customer with one these a few years back. We were asked to do a backbox delete on it. When I took a look it only had a single box across the rear. Told him it would be load. Piped it out and put a trim on it. Sounded like an 90s rally legend!

The engine probably would not last long without any back pressure from the back box anyway so being loud for a few weeks would make no difference.

Cheers! On learning it was such a low numbers car, I got a little more interested in it! I've always said normal cars were not for me. We had a customer with one these a few years back. We were asked to do a backbox delete on it. When I took a look it only had a single box across the rear. Told him it would be load. Piped it out and put a trim on it. Sounded like an 90s rally legend! Don't be giving me ideas The engine probably would not last long without any back pressure from the back box anyway so being loud for a few weeks would make no difference. My previous car had the exhaust fall off, and to be fair to it, after months of driving it without I had noticed no difference. I thought back pressure effected 2-strokes and maybe cars running carbs but not so much modern cars. Mine would still have back pressure from the Cat, also the restriction of a few metres of exhaust pipe must create some form of back pressure anyway? Either way not too sure I'm ready for another loud exhaust just yet
