WRT a bench, I think I'll make my own to fit in the corner of the garage. I'm thinking 18mm plywood for the top, but would it be better to cover this in a thin steel layer (say 1.2mm), leave it bare or do something else entirely?

Your local scrap merchant or steel fabricator are the two best places for dollies they will have offcuts of all shapes and sizes that they will usually let you have for the cost of a few beers. If your looking to do some shaping rather than just folding you`ll want a beater bag, one way to get a cheap one until you can afford a decent one is to buy a womans leather bag and fill it with sand. Should see you through a few shaping sessions.

There comes a time when you need to start thinking in 3 dimensions. These are very handy to have in the shop and don't cost a fortune. Go to Youtube and search for Lancashire metal stretcher for ideos of how to use.  ![]() Other tools that come to mind based on what I do: A hollowed out stump is an alternative to an English wheel and cheap to make. So are tucking forks. The sandbag and mallet has already been suggested. Don't forget a planishing spoon to smooth out the shapes. GOOD sheet metal sheers are a must. If the budget allows, a bench mounted Beverly shear makes life a lot easier. Clecos and but-weld clamps are inexpensive and will be used often. I have 4 angle grinders. Wish I had 6. The cordless drill gets used A LOT so I buy Bosh |

Not strictly metal shaping related, but the best tool we bought for our car resto was a Black and Decker power file - used it endlessly to remove paint and rust and to grind down welds. Buy the blue zirconia belts from eBay.
We built a metal bender based on bmwTony's plans and it has been invaluable. I would also say to get a decent flip down welding helmet; it makes a huge difference.
