Okay car been driving perfect passed mot today
On way back started overheating. No coolant loss.
Rad top hose hot as is the bottom hose that goes from bottom of radiator to top of expansion tank
My mechanical knowledge is limited. It has two fans one on all the time when engine running and the other a slightly smaller electric one
At no point when engine on or off when overheating did the electric one come on.
I'm assuming this may be the issue?
So under steering wheel there are the relays but I have no idea which is the electric fan relay or the fuse with the relays. I have googled but none of the actual diagrams make sense and some of the videos have my relay set up but don't tell me what the are!
Any help advice would be appreciated
Cheers

I suspect the waterpump impeller has fallen off. The electric fan is for the AC and if you were overheating while driving there isn't much a fan will do, airflow is cooling the radiator at this point.

Ah I was thinking coolant temp sensor or the fan relay switch
Car did overheat once approx 18 months ago on a one off.

Is it actually showing real physical signs of overheating apart the gauge telling you it is? Ageing Audi (or any VAG) electrics can lead to a variety of misleading warnings......

Sadly it's overheating. The expansion tank proper bubbling.
Just seems so random

If the thermostat and radiator are in good condition and there is no coolant loss, and it overheats at speed then the next thing is the waterpump. It used to be a really common issue but by now most VWAG vehicles affected have had a replacement waterpump but it's not to say the impellers can't fall off any waterpump.

or the thermostat...... certainly worth try first as it's very much easier and cheaper to change!

Thermostat done. Cooling system bled. No change.
I know the aux fan has two functions. Ac and additional cooling
This fan does not work but I don't know when it stopped working. Air con has not worked for some time.
Car was bought off family member who has owned it from new but he has no idea about fan.
I'm just wondering if I'm barking up the wrong tree with the cooling system and thinking it may be the aux fan.
Checked all relevant fuses including ones under the dash but still on luck.
Also fan does not come on when air con is on as it should.
Failing any pointers I'm looking to get the water pump done.
Gutted really as it's my boys car who has just passed his test and just want to get it back on the road.

Again I'll say it, if it's overheating while the car is being driven, it's NOT a fan issue. That's throwing you a red herring. The fans are for cooling when stationary or slow moving (traffic creeping), they will make no difference when the car is moving so it is getting hot while being driven you need to look elsewhere for your fault.

I agree with Rich. Check your heaters are getting hot too. No heat or going from hot to cold as driving/stopping then I'd say water pump

Update
I have noticed that the tensioner pulley that tensions the serpentine belt looks to be vibrating with visible movement approx half cm back and forth with engine running?
Could this be an indication of possible issues with the water pump?

Could this be an indication of possible issues with the water pump? Sadly no, this is normal for the operation of the Sprung automatic belt tensioner.

Also worth a check to see if the radiator is blocked just running hose into top and seeing if it's flowing easily out of lower.
Also if it's fairly easy to access the stat then remove it and then fill system, when still cold remove top hose and start engine to see if pump is pushing the water through as it should pull it from the lower pipe. You may be able to do this with the stat in if it's not a complete shut off one but I don't know about that model.

Thanks all advice much appreciate.
car dropped at garage tonight for check up and work tomorrow.
Also there was little to no coolant being pushed through the return pipe to top of expansion tank bit of steam though! Mechanic reckons it is water pump but will burp system first to eliminate air lock and will flush rad too just to be sure first said he would also do something else but can't remember . . Sorry
Will update as soon as I'm told what issue is.

Impeller was free spinning due to being cracked. Water pump off and timing belt getting done at same time
Crankshaft gear needed removing but the lip was slightly crushed in vice so now trying to find crankshaft gear! Would be easier to find hens teeth!
