Well, rotary life. Just spent the best part of 2 days trying to start it. Ran then dies. Started briefly and then died. Assumed it was out of fuel (no gauge remember...) Fresh fuel in't tank and nothing. Lots of churning but no start. Its at this point I learned of a problem called 'flooding' Probably familiar to 90% of enlightened folk on here, not me, who hasn't seen or dealt with a carburettor for many, many years. Apparently, if a rotary doesn't catch on the first start, it instantly floods, and will never start until you contort your arms into unnatural positions and get more cuts than a self harmer trying to get the plugs out to dry them. Me, being the lateral thinking guy I am, put the plugs into the HT leads, pulled the fuel pump fuse and cranked it over. 2 of the 4 plugs, leading plugs were so carbon-d up they were barely sparking! Quick clean, back in, sorted. Always pays to check the basics first Coilovers on the way, one of the 4 ancient Bridgestone Potenza tyres has finally leaked its last and won't inflate any more, thats about it lol

Pretty standard de-flood procedure... EGi relay out so it isn't fuelling... you only really need to take out the leading (lower) plugs and crank the chambers clean. Warming the plugs with a torch usually helps
Word of warning though... once a rotary floods and fouls the plugs they're almost always knackered afterwards. expensive too, so you're probably reluctant to replace them. But if you don't you'll probably get more instances of slow starting... thus flooding... thus more and more knackerdness to the plugs. It's a downwards spiral once it starts, just swap them and save yourself a massive PITA down the line. Plus living with the "what's gonna happen when I turn the key" paranoia

Is that for real? I've not heard of that but maybe I've just been lucky. I've always got away with giving them a nice clean with petrol and brake cleaner carefully using a toothbrush. I know your never to use metal brushes on plugs even though old manuals back in the day would tell you to (when plugs were strong real man's plugs....)
One thing I did learn recently from an auto sparky is not to be a cheap barsteward.. Buy new plugs if in doubt. He stated that even though a plug might show a spark when out of the car if its worn out it won't spark under load with 150psi of compressed air at the gap to jump.

Yep its real, Ive seen it with my own eyes! Because rotaries hoof so much fuel in, the plugs get so wet they'll not spark well enough. And cleaning in the traditional way doesn't work because they're a surface discharge style plugs, the electrode is recessed inside the plug. The plugs themselves were new when I had the car previously and have one basically no miles, just lots of cold starts and long idles.

Plus living with the "what's gonna happen when I turn the key" paranoia There was big, healthy sparks when I checked them, and I did a couple if boost runs on my 'private test track' on Sunday and it boosts well and pulls strong with no issues, started fine today too. If the worst comes to the worst Ive got my plug removal technique down pat, will take 5 minutes lol.

I used to have a full bridged engine in my old fd and when it was newly built and tight, trying to get it to start was tricky as it would dump so much fuel in on turn over. If it didn’t catch first time I’d had it and it would flood. Many a time I had to de flood it and get new plugs and when they’re cooler racing ones it soon added up £££. Having the cold start turned off on the ecu helped no end and it didn’t happen again after that. Wouldn’t of changed it for the world though

And lo, a box of goodness and interesting newspaper did arrive from Japan. Overnight parts y0. Bloody expensive in the end though And this rather important brass bush for the gear lever, hopefully remove all the slop!

I don't exactly know what they are, they look like Futura's but Ive never seen a single piece set. Maybe Fittipaldi's? Prime for a J spec track car

Coil overs done today. Its such a funny car, really, REALLY long, but double wishbone front suspension (as was de rigour of the 90s) but a strangely complicated, 4 link, railing arm, twin shock rear lay out. I'm kind of thinking of a good set up, and throwing it round Cadwell. But the brakes would probably be on fire after lap 2 How about that for a rear shock? Its about 3 feet long!! [/url

And its done. I personally think it needs more lows on the back, I might do that tomorrow. Took it for a drive, its so strange. You really feel the wheelbase, compared to my E36 track car its feels like a super tanker pitching at sea, no doubt a set up issue. The shocks I thought were basic turns out they've got 36 position damping adjustment too. But ultimately, its never going to be a sports car, just have to try and keep it under control
