I'm looking at buying a 1989 Honda Civic 1.4 Auto with 63,000 miles, one owner, with a couple months left on the MOT. It seems to be in over all good condition, with a bit of a dent in the front passenger wing and a little rust on that same wing. The only other thing is that it was parked up in the summer and the rear window burst in the heat. Unfortunately I don't think this was covered up immediately either. I've not been to see it personally yet but it has been offered to me for £200 or it's going to be taken to scrap.
At £200 for a retro with MOT doesn't really sound too bad to me, however only managed to find one rear window or entire tailgate and the guy wants £150 it or £450 for the whole car. So I'm wondering, really, if it is worth spending what would probably end up being £650 on one car.
I've seen video of the car running and being driven and seen plenty of pictures, and trust that all is as it seems with the car, but what would it really be worth?
Thanks Charles

I'd suggest that you check out the MOT history. It has been doing very low mileage for years, low hundreds in recent years, which is probably down to an elderly disabled owner who has had to give up driving or has died. They haven't been tackling any of the MOT 'Advisory' issues which aren't fails so maintenance has probably generally been neglected. Saying that, Honda's are mechanically robust and it's usually the tinworm that gets them. Also, (as a small-engined automatic), it's not the type of car that gets bought by a boy racer and hammered, this was probably an OAP's shopping buggy. I'd want to give this car a really thorough check over, particularly the underside, to be assured that it's not in the terminal stages of corrosion. It looks decent on the photos but Japanese cars of this era are good at looking good whilst hiding lots of rot. £200.00 seems fair but it never hurts to try it on and haggle. I'd keep looking for the rear glass as that sounds pretty steep to me! With all the issues sorted, a valet and a new MOT on it the car would probably be worth £1K-£1½K. Worst case scenario, expensive MOT fail : You'd almost certainly get all your money back if you had to break the car and probably even turn a small profit. Best case scenario, could be a starter car towards THIS.

That's why I was thinking I'd probably buy the whole spares car in case there were any other bits I needed and then track car the spares car! And now that is one tasty little Honda!

Surprisingly there are still quite a few of them out there but that will change at some point. If the car is sound and you start using it and showing it a bit of love, there's only 1 way the value is going on these.

If I do get it will certainly be loved, and I had seen a few on eBay and the likes but all had been modified so wasn't too sure of true value or how many were about standard. Think I'd be keeping it standard and just enjoying it like that. But I certainly would be tempted seeing how good some of these look modified
