Insurance is such a random gamble its not true. Apart from the ability for companies to change prices day to day, my 25 Yo son is now rebuilding a 1972 RRC V8 which we've had stored here for the last few years, because he has now discovered that it is twice the price to insure his 1991 RRc 200tdi than a 1972 V8, when the V8 is unlimited mileage and the TDI is restricted to 7.5K a year.
You work it out because I can't, 2 door parts are ridiculous money, and surely 2 tonnes of V8 power is more of a risk than a TDi?

Insurance is such a random gamble its not true. Apart from the ability for companies to change prices day to day, my 25 Yo son is now rebuilding a 1972 RRC V8 which we've had stored here for the last few years, because he has now discovered that it is twice the price to insure his 1991 RRc 200tdi than a 1972 V8, when the V8 is unlimited mileage and the TDI is restricted to 7.5K a year. You work it out because I can't, 2 door parts are ridiculous money, and surely 2 tonnes of V8 power is more of a risk than a TDi? I've been here before; With my then 18 year old sister it was cheaper to have her on my 106 GTi over the 306 DTurbo and even an HDI! They claimed it was engine size, but anyone who knows anything will know that a stock 106 GTi will show an equally stock DTurbo or HDI a clean pair of heels but with as much protection as two scantily clad ladies out for the night during winter. But there is another way to look at it. The V8 in your case is older and most people don't have the patience to keep an old classic going as a daily, or find out which parts suppliers are better than others for not supplying curse word ; with Rimmers and Paddocks you're sorted there but you still have to fix the car! 1991 cars were far more refined right, and are probably a better prospect for dailying . But also a quicker car can be safer IME ; I know if I gave my now older sister the keys to my W124 she'd struggle to get it out of roundabouts quickly ; I'll be honest, even I keep it rolling up to lights so as to keep the momentum! It has near a zero overtaking ability which can get very annoying at times. Her Saab and argubaly my M3 have none of those issues ; roundabouts and junctions are a much easier prospect to deal with and even motorways ; you really have to plan your lane change in the W124! FWIW that's a non-turbo diesel which I reckon is probably a similar pace to your 200 TDI given the weight difference.
