So with the Discovery for sale, and the caravan awaiting a small repair before we advertise it, the situation might have arisen where we had a caravan on the drive without the capability of moving it. So, without really looking for one, something that ticked all the boxes appeared and I collected the new motor today. It may be long term, it may be for the winter only. I guess it may just be until the caravan sells....but I doubt it. It's a nice place to sit, and sounds rather sweet. It's a really early Audi A6, from 1997, which I believe was the first year of production of these. 2.8 V6, 30 valve 193 bhp Quattro permanent four wheel drive 5 speed auto/tiptronic box Gorgeous cream leather/blue interior Low miles for a 20 year old car (119k) Needs the timing belt changed, as although it's only done 30k since it was last changed, it was 13 years ago (parts supplied by the previous owner). The drivers window regulator is knackered, so I'll sort that (again, parts supplied by the previous owner). Front NS tyre needs replacing (was the only advisory on the MOT in September). Needs the usual damn good clean/clay/polish/wax etc. Wheels could do with a refurb. The seller is a good friend who runs his own garage with his dad. I trust him 100% when he says it's a great example. It's been up on the ramps, and it's completely solid underneath, but has been freshly wax oiled, as well as having a service (oil/filters/plugs). Just needs the cam belt sorting. Really enjoyed the 75 mile drive home. It's very smooth and refined, but sounds lovely too. Some pics after I got it home. The original stereo is pretty good, and it has a CD changer in the boot.

Does look like an unusually well cared for example.
The only alarm bell for me is the auto-box. Audi autos of that era have a tendency to fragility, not helped in the least by Audi describing them as "sealed for life" (but not mentioning that it's a short life) whereas ZF, who actually make the things, recommend 40k service intervals. If you are planning to keep it for any length of time then a gearbox service by a ZF agent with the proper flushing and circulating equipment (don't bother with Audi!) would be a good investment. The V6 engined cars don't suffer as badly as the V8 engined cars, but the V8 cars have a failure rate approaching 100%.
The V6 engine can also be rather prone to barfing oil everywhere, often because the breather system is blocked. Fixable without undue expense.

Is that interior standard? Mad combo of blue and cream. I’ve seen blue ones and cream ones but never the mix.

Waiting for "washing and polishing" photo's..... Not sure if that's a "love seeing Chris's washing/polishing pics" or "Oh jeez, not more washing/polishing pics". The internet is awful for not picking up on sarcasm or seeing it when it's not there.

I had a ‘99 2.5TDi Quattro a few years ago. I loved the design of the car, and the quality of the build, in fact it remains one of my favourites to this day - enjoy

I've got a '99 A4 Avant Quattro with this engine & gearbox, and a very similar dashboard with all the dials. Mine has a digital clock but I prefer your analogue version. The design of Audis from this era is almost perfect in my opinion, especially the interior, eve more so at night when it all lights up in red like a submarine.

My wife and I decided recently to work for ourselves, and pack in our 'normal' jobs. We are opening up a coffee shop in Saltburn in the New Year, so there won't be weekends spare to take the caravan away. Hence the sale of both the caravan and Discovery.

2.8 V6 bargain luxobarge? Yes. Cream/Blue interior? No. God no.
Really enjoy your threads showing all the small jobs that can really tidy up a car. She is looking a lot better already after just a wash/detail. Best of luck with it.

Is that the coffee shop you mentioned some weeks ago? To jump or not to jump? Good luck with this new adventure. I am sure it will work out for you. I just had a "google" look at Saltburn. Must be a nice place to be.

Nice. If it was the estate I'd be really jealous.
All the best for the business venture too.
