IME they are best mounted near the tank.
The Huco ones were the cheaper versions I was thinking of. It should do the job just fine.

Hi, If you're going to be off roading then have it at the tank end because it easier for any pump to push the than to pull, especially if your driving up a hill that's the last place you want to lose power.

Your probably wasting your time changing the pump assuming it is actually pumping well. A regulator is a good idea but the problem your having doesn't sound like it's being caused by excess fuel pressure anyway. If you did have excess pressure it would force open the float valve and flood the engine at idle but sounds like you have more of a fuel starvation issue here.
It could be so many things it's hard to say.

I'm currently working on a Dolomite 1850 (twin SU) and have fitted a Morris minor pump to the suspension turret just under the carbs.
they are about 3psi and you can get a 2nd hand one for about £25-30.

Finally home from work, gave the bay a quick look over today to make sure everything looked like it was going to the right place on the carb. All seems fine so going to see what sort of flow rate I’m getting out the pump tomorrow and take it from there....

Hey guys, been a busy few weeks and barely had time to look at the forum  The fuel pump that was on, was dribbling out, worked out it was doing 7.2ltrs/hr so I fitted one of the huco pumps mentioned above Seemed to have a better flow, great out, a run, seemed fine, but as usual, 10 minutes into the drive it sitting about 45/50 it started kangerooing, no revs like it was starved of fuel, but didn’t cut out this time. Pulled over at the side of the road, sat for 5-10 minutes then it drove home with just an odd hiccup, starting to wonder if it’s maybe the carb needing a tune up? Only other thing I’m starting to question, is with it being a 31 year old fuel tank could it be full of sh*t or the pick up pipe rotten inside.... |

Fuel tank was full of floating rust curse word which once dragged enough to the pick up pipe filter starved the carb. Mines currently taped to the front screen as I'm not keen on piping fuel into the interior!!   |

A fuel pressure gauge would be ideal for fault finding for this mate. I've been suffering the same with my Montego I've just put back on the road. Fuel tank was full of floating rust curse word which once dragged enough to the pick up pipe filter starved the carb. Mines currently taped to the front screen as I'm not keen on piping fuel into the interior!! I’ll get one ordered and get it fitted once I’m once I’m back from work again! The issue you found, could possibly be what’s causing mine, like I say, it’s an old tank, and if it’s only once it’s had time to drag up all the curse word, then it could well be the issue. I’ll get a gauge ordered! I really should have done it in the first place haha |

The only time my Hunter died was when a flake of crud got into the pickup pipe in the tank, and blocked the fuel line at the point it left the tank.
Suggestions :
Fit a glass fuel filter between the fuel pump and carb so you can see what's happening.
Remove the petrol filler cap, disconnect fuel line from the pump, blow (airline?) down the pipe backwards to check it's clear and reverse any blockages.
Remove your pickup from the tank, if it doesn't have a mesh filter in the tank to to stop crud getting sucked into fuel line - fit one !
As a temporary test - can you run a line from a gallon can in the boot to the fuel pump and see if it sorts the problem - if yes then you have a blocksge somewhere before the pump.

It could also be the tank breather has got blocked. I had this happen on a car with SU's and it gave the fuel starvation symptoms. I tested mine by leaving the fuel cap off and going for a short drive, obviously if you do this its at your own risk |
