I’ve been driving since 2002 but owned a lot of cars in my 15 years on the road, over 100 atleast.
I was bored today and as I’ve still got pictures of most of my old cars on the pc I ran a load of reg’s through the vehicle smart app to see how many were still showing as taxed and mot’d. I was shocked to find that out of around 40 reg’s checked only two cars were still showing as road legal! Even some of the cars that were mint when they left my ownership haven’t seen the road for years.
Even stranger looking through the mot history most of the cars no longer in the road didn’t even fail an mot. Makes me wonder what happens to these cars when they go into their new owners.
Anyone else done any better?

I wish we had this facility in Ireland. I’ve had 40 cars in 10 years and would be nice to check some of them out.

I got my licence in 1983 and I still have over half of the cars I've purchased. Many of those are now so rust shagged that they'll never be legal again though.

I wish we had this facility in Ireland. I’ve had 40 cars in 10 years and would be nice to check some of them out. This is about as good as you will get, NCT checker (NCT is the MOT equivalent in Ireland for everyone in the UK). Brings up the date the last NCT ran out. |

The Granada is SORN, and the only other one I know of is my VW Dormobile, which is also SORN and has been for about five years.

Could only find one of my old cars after nearly 30 years of driving but it’s the one car that shouldn’t be on the road, I wrote my 3 door cosworth off around 20 years ago and sold everything off of it then cut it up and buried it in a land fill but not to long ago my nephew rang me to let me know it was in fast ford magazine but was a different colour. Ringer alert.
ps insurance company never registered it so doesn’t show up as written off.

I used to buy cars on their last MOT and run them till it ran out, of them all the only ones I know are still on the road are my Volvo s70, MGF and golf mk2 number 3 (the one before my current one, the rest I sent on their way or the person after me cut them up

There are a few things to bear in mind. The average my cars have cost comes to around £1.3k. Over half of those were less than £1.5k. Like the OP, I have been driving for a similar amount of time. |

Anyone have any ideas the usual cause of a "Vehicle details could not be found" ? Just looked up one of the few cars I've ever sold and no details can be found - none at all. I sold it in Feb 2015 with 9 months MOT & on SORN and both the vehicle and MOT enquiries are now denying all knowledge of it...

Scrapped most of mine, the one car I did sell I expected to be used for parts, it was criminally rotten (74 Beetle). That got Moted in May after what I assume was a very costly and extensive restoration.

It all depends if they were scrapped properly I think and if the scrap dealer bothers to send the paperwork off/dvla bothered to delete it from their system. |

With two cars that I know of being scrapped: -2 came back as untaxed ; I know one of them was definitely scrapped. -The others came back as unknowns but I am guessing here. |

I found that instant car check hold records longer than the DVLA. Won't give you a current status but will confirm you have a live reg at least. |
