What paperwork do I need to carry in the UK when driving? Driving licence? V5? MOT certificate? Insurance certificate? I've lived in a few different countries and they all seem to have different rules. I've driven my Saab 900 for two years on Irish plates in both the Republic and the UK and always carried all paperwork just to sure, but as of yesterday it's on UK plates (which saves me a small fortune in road tax, insurance and even MOT). Spot the difference!

Personally I just carry my licence with me, everything else is electronic anyway. I've got a pdf of my insurance certificate but if Plod have any doubts they'll give them a ring anyway.

Licence can be checked electronically as well, you legally do not have to carry any documents if you have a UK address (and are on the electoral register) but it is recommended that you carry some form of identity, at the least it can help you prove that you are not someone else if you happen to look similar to a wanted person. You shouldn't carry the V5 in the car as if the car is stolen it can easily and quickly be sold on.

Main reason there's no documents in the car, if it gets nicked it makes things too easy. Carry my licence because at 26 I still get asked for id occasionally...

I'm still on a full "old" paper licence as I have had no endorsements or have ever moved , so as its a delicate old museum piece it stays in a drawer at home these days , besides who needs documents when even the number of times you go to the loo in this country is logged on cctv these days!

Only time I've ever carried anything was when I was on trade with a company who were too useless to add stuff to the MID, and I used to get pulled ALL the time.
Coppers thought it was hilarious I used to carry a laminated insurance certificate around with me!

I'm originally from a country where it's mandatory to carry an Ausweis as soon as you open your front door and no, it's not Nazi Germany. It's also mandatory to carry a driving licence and the car's registration document (now creditcard format for most cars) when driving; I think insurance and MOT papers are no longer required, but I'm not sure. In Ireland windscreens are plastered with discs (I had five: NCT, tax, insurance and two parking permits), glad to have my view back now the car's on UK plates.

Here you're supposed to carry everything, but I just have my license and photocopies of the Certificate of Registration and Official Receipt (for annual road tax) and on the one occasion I've been asked to produce, they were quite happy with that.
Most often they don't want to see anything apart from your "On-the-spot fine" slipped into their ticket book!

I don't carry anything. I used to carry my license but its an old paper one which even has some points written on by hand and some by typewriter. After a few years it started to fall apart so now it stays at home.
I think I'll be moving house in a few years so I'll be getting a modern one then.

According to the song 99 problems but the beach ain't one if you lock your documents in the glove box or the trunk then they need a mofo search warrant to look at them.
Presumably this is only accurate in USA though and may no longer be the case.
---------------- Am I under arrest or should I guess some more? "Well, you was doing 55 in a 54 License and registration and step out of the car Are you carrying a weapon on you? I know a lot of you are." I ain't steppin' out of 5h17, all my paper's legit "Well, do you mind if I look around the car a little bit?" Well, my glove compartment is locked, so is the trunk in the back And I know my rights, so you gon' need a warrant for that

I have my licence but never show it on demand. I only ever show a bank card for identity. I always got told never to show anything when you get stopped as you can be issued a fine on the spot. Whereas if you don't - they have to give you a producer to show your documents at a station within 14 days and it's more paperwork/hassle. Then more change you'll be told to go on your way. Don't know if this is true but the only time I showed my licence was the one time I got a fine!

Don't know if this is true but the only time I showed my licence was the one time I got a fine! That's a load of curse word. In short the police do not give on the spot fines to UK licence holders they will issue an FPN for you to pay later if you have committed an offence, they can easily check via PNC if you hold a licence or insurance and the status of the MOT if there is any doubt over your licence or insurance it is very unlikely that you get a 'producer' but more likely that your car will be impounded until you then produce your documents. The days of a 'producer' are long gone except in rare circumstances .So showing your licence won't make any difference, if anything it can help you prove you are legit. There is a bit of a kudos (and an unofficial leaders board) to the cop that gets the most SEC165 (No insurance or licence) seizures especially with RPU's.
