I replaced mk2 granada dipstick, the electronic one, with a standard cologne dipstick, however even though it is up to max i noticed when i had timing cover off to fix leak that oil was not up covering bottom of timing gear in sump. Either dipstick is giving wrong reading or timing gear is fed oil another way. Does anyone know if oil should cover bottom of timing gear?

P.S. i don't have old dipstick to check difference although i'm sure i checked length when replaced i.e. from tip to where stopper is on dipstick tube.

Actually thinking on it oil was leaking from timing cover so must have been getting in there. Thinking it must be the crank throws the oil in there. I'm sure i remember reading the bottom timing gear was immersed in sump oil hence my thinking the level was too low.

You could check the marks on the dipstick... Find how much oil the engine takes (ask somwhere reliable, or Haynes) Drain oil and fill with required quantity. Check level using the dipstick, hopefuly the level is just where it should be - if not the marks are wrong for your engine  |

I'll double check tomorrow but pretty sure they're just splashed with oil not immersed in it

On the Essex there's an oil feed hole behind the timing gear - I suspect the Cologne is the same.

Hi, The bottom gear won't be in the oil because that would mean the crankshaft would be as well, they don,t do that because it's too much load on it splashing into the oil and risks breaking it. In fact some engines have windage trays to stop it.

I can confirm oil is defo getting there as timing cover is still leaking (grrr) however i just cleaned the area and sealed it. Could have done that in the first place (doh) i do plan to flush it and refill. I think dipstick is likely ok but will confirm when refill it.
