Just got an Audi TT for senior management.
The PO is an elderly lady who had a private plate on it. This was changed online a couple of days before we collected the car and the plates changed to suit.
Of course (and those who know anything about the private plate system will know this), the number on the new owners part of the V5 no longer works as the V5 was automatically superseded when the reg was changed........ so we can't tax it (or SORN it)
The DVLA told me a week ago that our best bet was to get the PO to send us the number from new V5 when it arrives and use that, but so far it hasn't arrived (and could take weeks). It also seemed like there were no other options that wouldn't take weeks either. They also advised me to tell the PO not to try and do the ownership change until she gets the new V5, but of course she had already sent it off, with may further confuse things.
The car does still show as taxed on the current, "new" number, but it's not "our tax" so although we probably wouldn't get a pull from ANPR, if anything bad happened it could be awkward. At present we are using our original car, but we have another use for this and it's becoming a problem.
Seems that there is a damn great hole in the DVLA system that allows this stupid situation. It's hardly unusual for an ownership change and a private plate recovery to happen close together. It's particularly irritating as it's all part of the game they play to get paid twice for the same month!
Anyone have any wise words? And yes, this is my first encounter with the plate change system - if I knew then what I know now, things would have been done differently!
Thanks
Nick
