What cheap cars are available (not flukes, or one offs, but ones that can be found fairly regularly for sale at similar prices. Lets say anything upto £3k for something average with a bit of mot, maybe a few £ more. I'm quite happy with the fleet at the moment, but happiness is always another click away on ebay. And I may be looking for another car for road rallies and 12cars.
So, the criteria
Rear wheel drive, thats is, does not necessarily need to be high performance, anything from TR7 to Morris minor or whatever?
Or, front wheel drive but the fastest naturally aspirated car you can think of in budget?

Definitely a MX5 1.6 or even a early 1.9 Z3. I keep coming back to them as other cars never deliver and they are cheap as chips

RWD suits me so is always on my radar, my 2 top choices would be : BMW. I liked my E36 325i/328i, not so keen on E93 325i. Have had good reports about the 330D. Nissan (if you can find one the drift boys and rust bugs have missed), S13/S14/S15 etc for huge RWD retro turbo fun.

I have an IS200 sport. Cheap and cheerful and have an LSD in all sport models as standard. Be warned they are very basd on fuel and not the fastest. They are very comfy and very fun in the wet.

That's a bit vague, thousands of cars could be suggested for you!
I've been tempted to get a rwd daily again, particularly the E39 330d touring. It's just a shame that it's a BMW. I think Volvo guys have a natural dislike of BMW's!

Some interesting suggestions so far, thanks. I know I have been a bit vague, but that was on purpose, Hoping people think of stuff i had not considered.
I've had quite a few classic and modern Alpina's and I have just sold my B10. Ive had an E30 M3 and E34 3.8. So I think I'm going to say Ive been there and now its time to experience something else.
A caged MX5 is certainly something I have just started to think about, same with a Civic R.
I'm also going to look into Proton Satria, MR2, Celica.

I would seriously recommend the ZZW30 MR2, the 1.8 1ZZ VVTI engine is fantastic, plus if you get the facelift model it comes with factory 6 speed & a LSD, known to handle even better than the Porsche Boxster on the twisties!

Why has no one mentioned an early RX8, they are cheep, rwd and not to bad at speed? Its just the dredded rotory engine that you would have to put up with

3K could buy you a half decent V8 Mercedes - MY old CL500 was fantastic fun and damn fast for something made of granite!

The later MR2 might make the list, never really had any experience with them.
V8 Mercs to big and heavy for what I want.
RX8. Nothing against a rotary, would not mind an RX7 one day, but I don't like the look of the 8.

I'll pipe up and bang the Volvo drum...
Get a 940 2.3 turbo saloon (much less desirable then estates) and there's a huge amount of tuning options from mild to wild. 200hp for next to no cost, 300hp for a bit of investment.
Widely used for rallying in scandinavia so lots of suspension upgrades also available and not as heavy as you might think, ~1400kg as bought.

A guy in my club stage rallies a 140 and I know of a few 240 being road rallied.
I would need to stick to n/a for road rallies to ensure eligibility for the maximum amount of events. But a a few different Volvo's are on the radar.
