I have a 1996 Peugeot 406 1.9 XUDT with the Bosch fuel system.
The tickover speed is high (around 950rpm) and I can't adjust it out. Bizarrely, it drops to around 800rpm when at high altitude (like at the top of a Norwegian mountain).
Is there anything that's not the tickover screw I could check?

Does it have the cable operated waxstat cold start? they play up and wind the RPM up. Ignore the comment about the idle mixture screw, It's a diesel..

Indeed, ignore me. I had to read the OP a few times to make sure it was definitely a diesel too mind, silly Peugeot engine codings

From what I remember (it's been a long time since I had a poke around) the cable needs to be under tension to drop the idle, so I'm assuming that if the fast idle thing is disconnected (if it can be disconnected) then it defaults to the fast idle position?

Wrong way round. The cable pull increases the idle. Had this problem on my BX and fathers berlingo as well as a customers dispatch. The dispatch was a nail and I seem to recall disconnecting the cable completely as it was causing so much issue.
