1997 Ford Freda 2.5-litre petrol V6 2WD automatic XLT.
</attachment>
It has 105,000 miles (showing 168,000km) and has had more than £4,500 spent on it over the last four years, making this one of the most mechanically-sound Bongo/Fredas available.
Since I bought it in October 2013, I’ve spared no expense in making this Freda as dependable as possible. The result is a highly reliable example, which has been our family car for nearly four years. As well as regularly servicing the engine, parts replaced include:
Rebuilt cylinder head (skimmed, crack tested and decoked, including recutting and grinding valve seats)
Head gasket
Timing belt, tensioner bearing and idlers
Alternator
Cam cover gaskets (twice!)
Exhaust manifold gasket
Inlet manifold gaskets
Cam seals
Coolant temperature sensor
Ignition leads
Spark plugs (twice)
Front brake discs and pads
4x tyres
Of all the Bongo/Freda derivatives, this is the one to have. The Ford Freda was offered in higher spec than the Bongo, and features additional equipment such as, automatic climate control, electronic folding door mirrors, electric window blinds. We also fitted a new head-unit, which has USB and Bluetooth connectivity.
The 2.5-litre petrol V6 is the only Bongo/Freda engine really capable of long-distance motorway journeys, and delivers almost identical fuel economy to the underpowered diesel.
This Freda has solid bodywork and chassis, with no rust to speak of. Of course, it is a 20 year old car, so it isn’t cosmetically perfect – there is a small dent on the passenger-side B-pillar, and a stonechip on the windscreen. It could also do with a good polish.
