Some of you may recall that originally I was looking at making a planetary gear reversing box. Canned that idea as having spoken to a couple of Westfield owners, the general consensus was that they are curse word, need too much backlash in them to get able to get them to engage when stationary, and that electric reverse was the way to go. Having already obtained a suitable starter motor from a Mazda Rx8, I have been thinking about where I could get a suitable gear for this to run up against. Not keen on having a custom gear cut as that's going to be £100 plus.Found one within my budget. Only just. By one p.... So what does £9,99 get you these days? Brand new, secondhand, never been raced or rallied.... It's a flywheel and ring gear off a Tecumseh lawnmower. Here's the starter Bendix gear off the Mazda starter.. And here is the most incredible thing you are ever going to see. It's got exactly the same pitch as the Techumseh flywheel 😳😂😂😂😎 Stroke of genius there. Now have the means to make this project go backwards. Well, progress was so slow ,it was inevitable....

Biggie Hill site?
Very cool landing in a time warp site.
I always love seeing one retro or interesting old car, then you hit the jackpot.

I'm not that far from Bicester and keep meaning to visit when they have their meetings. It looks amazing and their are some interesting companies there.
I was going to go the The Classic & Sports Car Show last weekend but my wife inconveniently broke her leg and I've been playing nursemaid (no uniform, no pictures).

Sorry to hear about Mrs Mark’s downfall 👎🏻 Heritage center well worth the visit. Company there makes Radiators for all the vintage cars. Mesmerising to watch 😊

Sorry to hear about Mrs Mark’s downfall 👎🏻 Well if she must play around with horses (that doesn't sound right :-).

Had a couple of hours this morning,so gave the flyweel a stern talking to. Conversation with it became heated. Bit of light bludgeoning and off came the ring gear that was shrunk onto the cast iron flywheel Only need the ring gear. Had thought of machining down the flywheel and redrilling it to suit my needs, but seeing it s cast iron I decided against it. I hate cast iron. The shavings make me sneeze and the dust goes everywhere. You land up looking like a Welsh Coalminer on honeymoon. Well, that is if you don't scratch your balls at any stage of the proceedings, otherwise you just land up looking like a Welsh Coalminer... So ,seeing the lathe was busy,I found a bit of flat plate offcut to chuck in the mill Knocked a hole and a step into what will become the middle Sent it to church to make it holy Added more lightness Added the outside Machined the step where the ring gear will shrink onto Machining finished Just need to wait for Mrs Bravo to leave me home alone for any length of time and that ring gears going in the oven ,the new hub going into the freezer and a marriage made in heaven will take place a little while later.....😊

Why the teardrop shaped lightening holes, JB?

Whether you believe you can, or you cannot, you're probably right.

Going back to these - are they for the brake lines on the trains on the RH&DR?

I had pondered over the same question of the shape of the holes but didn't ask in case JB said... "Well it's obviously...." and continued on to describe complex engineering principles relating to stress fracturing or something. Then I'd have felt stupid. Although there is a certain amount of evidence to support the theory that I am.

I was talking with my step-dad at the weekend and he mentioned they had commissioned some new rubber hosing because they were having issues disconnecting the brake lines in the confined space between the carriages! Small world!

Small world! The rubber hoses were another issue. Did the tool for that a couple of months back. They have samples, think they have now placed an order 😊

Back off on a tenuous link again 😂 This. Why? What is it,and more importantly why do I need it? Back in time. Couple of years back I was asked if I could make something for someone. Given this someone kind of owns his own country,it was a bit difficult to say no... So,let the games begin. He had decided ,seeing most of his country was covered in sand, collecting tanks was probably a better past time than gardening. And he wanted a Panzer 1... I was supplied with two castings and some drawings of the lever arm shockabsorbers . Pretty fun things to make, got me thinking a bit. Housings done,it was time to make the pretty funky pistons The fun part was still to come...

The reason I got the job was because the shock arm and lever are splined. Not really a problem in itself if you are geared up, sic,for cutting gears and splines. The problem with these are the splines are cut onto a tapered shaft. All the gear cutters that had been approached took this taper as being their ticket to charge whatever they liked. All quotes just for the two sets of matching splines came in over £2k 😳 Taking the urine in my book. Me,not being able to keep my mouth shut said it was good money at half that price, and so it was offered to me . No problem apart from never having cut splines before 😂😂😂. How hard can it be? After that bit of silliness ,normal service resumed, and I put my foot down and said yes,I would do the splines on condition I got to cherry pick the bits I wanted to do. Nice to have the shoe on the other foot for a change, and seeing they were up $hit creek without a paddle,Ithey agreed. I did pretty much the whole shockabsorber assembly apart from silly little brass valves that I couldn't be arsed to do. So,best I figure out how to cut splines without the correct machines.. Made a tool to cut the internal splines Did a test piece, which came out spline like Did the shaft which was a lot easier Armed with the new found knowledge that I could indeed do this,I made the parts required Very good money for cutting the splines seeing it took me less than a day...😜 Ok, so what's this got to do with the Ape? To be continued....
