Evening RR, Been giving my mate a hand getting his 1.8 turbo k series ready to drop into his zr. He's got new exhaust studs, so the old ones needed to come out, the rest were fine just this one. Its cracked a small corner section of the head off and pulled most of the threads out Would this be alright with a helicoil?

Unlikely to hold, doesn't look to be enough meat there to hold it? But try it, worst case scenario is it doesn't work and you lost nowt.

Was that stud too long and bottomed out? As said there's no meat there, but it might be worth finding out if you can drill and tap a slightly deeper hole there (depending on water jacket oil ways etc).

There's a few threads left in that, it's clean it and run a tap down it, then thread lock it in.

I'd be drilling deeper and tapping the existing thread size then finding a longer stud.
Ideally have a look to see if you can avoid water jacket etc but even thats not the end of the world as you can fit the stud with threadlock and it will seal. A friend did exactly that after drilling into the waterway.
If you do go down the route of inserting it helicoil isnt the way to go with an open side, something like Time-serts will be more likely to work as they are sold rather than the coiled wire of a helicoil.

As above, weld and timesert is the only way that's gonna fix properly. Helicoils are garbage.

Thanks guys, appreciate the help I think we'll drill deeper and tap it and see how it goes, interesting stuff about helicoils though, I had always thought they were great as alot of people use them on mini sumps

I've never heard anyone speak badly of a helicoil before, they're fine - I've used loads of em. The only problem is if it's a thread that's used regularly, sometimes the insert can try and come out with the fastener which is annoying.
No good if you break through into a waterway though as they'll never seal.

Helicoils are fine if fitted and treated properly. Most ally stuff should have them in as standard really. Problems arise when fitted badly or used with thread locks etc. With this i would build up with weld and put an insert in.

Just about any lump of alloy on an aircraft that needs a thread, will have helicoil inserts as standard
